EDIT: Dear Fresh Cafe owner, Wow. Despite receiving a four star review, you couldn’t resist challenging my opinion. I’m frankly quite annoyed with your response.
A few years ago, the owner of a boutique Perth GF bakery appeared on The Shark Tank and admitted that her artisan GF loaves of bread which sold (at the time) for $13-$15 cost her $1-60 to produce. That’s an 800 -900% markup to save you working it out. If you bother to ask around, you’ll find that a lot of people who must eat GF worry about similarly being taken advantage of. The problem with eating GF is that you never know what to expect - is the food genuinely safe to eat / is the quality reliable / is there much choice / is it affordable / does it taste nice or does it taste like cardboard / is there GF food available everyday or just sometimes???? The only way to find out is to give each place a go, which is exactly what I did.
Thank you for pointing out the obvious in your reply - you have a clean and inviting cafe, filled with fresh, good quality food. Hence the four stars. Let’s look at it a different way, though.
Price and quality are subjective and mostly comparative. If I were a well paid, carefree young professional with plenty of disposable income and possibly a preference to eat GF because it’s a trendy, healthier option, I probably wouldn’t think twice about the cost of your food. I’d just go there because it’s delicious.
In reality, I’m obliged to eat GF and am living on jobseeker allowance. I saved up to go to your cafe and give it a try. If memory serves, there were no prices displayed with the food and I was quite shocked with the total but didn’t want to embarrass the young lady behind the counter by questioning the bill. I just checked my receipt - I spent $9.50 on one of your modestly sized sausage rolls and a whopping $17-50 on ONE filled bagel. That’s almost $30- for a fairly average lunch - after all - it wasn’t a hot meal in a dining room with table service - it’s a cafe in Osborne Park.
It cost way more than I expected it to and wiped me out financially for the rest of the week. For $17.50 elsewhere, I can buy an entire hot meal, or almost 3 loaves of bread at Woolies, so yes, by my standards, your food is too expensive for me, but hey, please forgive my reduced circumstances. You can keep your four stars.
ORIGINAL COMMENT: Lovely GF food which is horribly expensive. Had a GF sausage roll and a bagel, but sadly cannot afford to eat...
