I’ve been going to this place for a long time because I’ve always loved their waffles. The staff also know me quite well, since I always order the same special waffle. Every time I used to come, the manager never sommes or made me feel comfortable. I never really paid much attention to it, but I always felt that this particular manager didn’t like me. Whenever I greeted her, she would never smile back, even though she always smiled at other customers. I don’t know if it’s because I look different or because of my skin colour, but if that’s the case, it would be really disappointing.
There was only one Young asian worker who always greeted me with a genuine smile and never treated me badly she was the only one who consistently made me feel welcome
One day, I went to the restaurant and ordered the same thing as usual. There was a misunderstanding at the counter: I wanted to scan my membership card first to earn more points, but I had already paid. I asked the cashier if it was possible to do a refund so I could rescan my card and pay again to collect the points. She said no which surprised me because I’ve worked in different places, and every EFTPOS terminal usually allows refunds. She even asked the manager, and as soon as the manager came over, she abruptly said, “We can’t do refunds.”
I wasn’t even asking for a real refund just to redo the transaction to scan my card. She said “no” several times and seemed irritated. I stayed calm and told her colleague it was fine, then I repeated my usual order. Because I always order the same thing, I wasn’t fully paying attention while she repeated it, thinking they already knew my regular order.
When I received my waffle, there was no Nutella. I asked why they hadn’t added it, and the cashier said, “You didn’t ask for it.” I replied, “But you know I always get the same thing.” This misunderstanding, combined with the manager’s attitude, made me lose my temper. Things escalated, and at one point, the manager told me to leave, speaking to me in a way that felt disrespectful and discriminatory.
This was extremely disappointing, especially because I’ve been a loyal customer for a long time. I admit that I lost my cool I don’t usually let anyone speak to me in that way, especially someone who has treated me differently from the beginning. I may have made a mistake by reacting emotionally, but her behaviour was unacceptable.
I even found other reviews mentioning this same manager, with photos attached below, and it seems I’m not the only one who has experienced this kind of treatment. A friend of mine, who is also African, has felt the same way about this manager.
I don’t know who the current owner of this restaurant is, but I imagine that this manager will try to justify her behaviour by blaming me, as she always does. Twice in life, people need to learn to admit when they are wrong something not everyone is willing to do. Read moreI've been a customer at Gelare Karrinyup for about 7 years and I've been coming here almost every week. I usually order the 2 stacks of Nutella banana pancakes and they used to be very good which is why I was such a regular customer. They also had really good coffee which went well with their pancakes. However, over the last few years I have seen the pancakes shrink from good sized pieces (about 15cm across) to almost less than 10cm across. The problem is that it's not just the size that has changed, the mix appears to have changed as well, it's quite crumbly now while it used to be really nice and soft before. I have also been served almost cold coffee and pancakes on multiple occasions which I've had to return and ask for a remake as it's just unacceptable. I don't blame the staff since they wouldn't reduce the quality of the product out of spite of the customers, rather I blame the owner since it's clear that he's trying to save money by doing these things. I personally wouldn't come here anymore as I've been more and more disappointed with every visit and I've basically have had enough. If you want great coffee and pancakes/waffles I would personally recommend going to the Gelare South Perth since they have far better quality products that are at least hot when they serve you. When we asked they sent another staff member (the one that took our order) and she said are you sure you didn't order banana (don't eat, and never have eaten bananas ever so pretty damn sure I said strawberry). NO APOLOGY was given and instead of taking plate away and fixing issue they just brought strawberries on the side. After pulling off all the banana there was hardly any nutella. I requested if we could at least have more nutella and then another staff member come slam down a small container of nutella not say anything or even look at us. Absolutely appalling service, disrespectful staff members that made us feel like it was our fault. Only to have the table next us receive the wrong order too and when he tried to tell them they didnt change it either and told him it was his fault for ordering wrong.
