I attended the restaurant on the 23rd of December for dinner. We had a party of 12 so our only choice was the set menu. The restaurant is new but @ $80 a head we expected great things as the location of the venue is pretty spectacular. The service initially was great, it was obvious there was a lack of experience amongst staff as there efficiency just wasn't on point shortly after this. We started off with the oysters 🦪 ( to die for ) & the arepas however 😞 some were burnt, stone Cold and didn't taste nice. There was then a huge wait between this course & another, we then had to ask two separate waitresses twice as to what was going on. On top of that the kitchen forget too send plates to accommodate the entire group, so 3 quarters of the table got to eat and the other people had to wait. If your doing a set menu you all want to eat and enjoy the food together it's awkward. Service was really slow removing our plates and glasses to the point where we had to move the plates to another table it was becoming so cluttered. We ordered quiet abit of drinks, and at $15-20 a pop per cocktail you would think a table paying that much, that the staff would be fast on the uptake to keep it flowing, it felt like they were ignoring us ( we spent over $1500 on our bill for perspective ) the final icing on the cake was the desert's the expectation & presentation fell so short it reminded me of a back yard bbq. They were sorbets and ice creams given to you in a to go tub. It lacks so badly in refinery and to finish the night on that note was disappointing . One other thing, when your ocean views are your main selling point ( and people wanna share that on the Gram) make sure that the windows are clean, as we tried to take sunset videos ( we were mid way back in the restaurant so not directly in front of the windows) it was that obvious how dirty they were. When we paid I was asked for feedback, I gave said feedback but it was brushed off and no compensation of a meal or anything offered which is crazy considering how much we paid. Anyway I would wait a good 6 months before going here if your a foody, they well and truly have some massive...
Read moreThe food that we ordered was very lacking in flavor and the portions were small for the price. The kinkones were just corn nuts from a bag that you can get from any supermarket. The arepa was the size of a coin, raw in the middle, and topped with a red pepper chutney that tasted like it was from a can, and shredded crab that had almost no seasoning. The ceviche was near flavorless and a tiny portion for 26 dollars, and lacked a lot of ingredients that make ceviche great. Ceviche and arepas are not new things to us, having spent years in both Peru and Colombia and eating these things every week almost. The violeta wine (from WA) tasted very watery and again had almost no flavor, you can see from the picture how it looks. Also, the menu is sort of ambiguous. It’s a fusion of things but there isn’t a great description of what you are ordering and it seems really all over the place. They aren’t classic dishes that stand on their own based on name alone, so I felt like some more explaining would be great, which is why I put 3 stars there, because service is more than just the wait staff, who were very good btw, but how you present the menu and the experience of choosing. Overall, we mentioned that the food didn’t meet our expectations and they graciously removed it from our bill (we hadn’t eaten even 10% it was so bad) so that deserves some recognition. Our waitress was very nice and she was great for us. My advice would be to embrace a couple of concepts within the Latin American cuisine they are going for, expand on those ideas really well, and have experienced people make the food.Instead it seems like they mixed a few buzzwords together without knowing what makes those dishes great. Ceviche, mole, tacos, arepas, etc. The execution was just poor overall, which was a real shame considering we saw the Peruvian flags hanging everywhere when we walked in, which is normally an encouraging sign. For example, an arepa is probably the cheapest thing you can make on the menu. Make it big, make it tasty, and load it up with your fancy crab or whatever if you want...
Read moreDinner for 4 recently and we spent $425 - an entree, mains and 2 drinks each.
VENUE: This is an iconic venue and it's retained it's friendly atmosphere. The high, round tables are a tad awkward as you're far away from everyone - although I guess it's meant for a Sunday Session, rather than dining.
STAFF: Staff seemed a tad under-drilled. Friendly but didn't come across as highly-attentive or capable. Could be management thing.
FOOD: Food was acceptable but not outstanding - and when you're paying near fine-dining prices you do expect excellence. I ordered the $60 Scotch Fillet, cooked Medium, and it was thin, small and tough. And for some strange reason they thought it was a good idea to bathe it in Jalapeno Butter? What's crazy, is the $50 Striploin Steak was actually tender and lovely. Top marks for that one. But the Scotch was disappointing and I know you can buy a glorious grass-fed, near 500mg, 1 inch thick cut from many a decent butcher for around $25 a steak. So where does the $60 come from for an inferior steak with literally nothing - nothing save alfalfa - accompanying it?
The Swordfish and Calamari were great. The Chorizo was clunky, but nice - but would have benefited from being cut into thinner slices. Barramundi was delicious but a small piece.
OVERALL: Staff need to be drilled they're there to make everyone's night - from front of house to wait staff. Food would benefit from coming out a tad quicker. Did take a while. One waitress asked us if we were ready for Dessert before our Mains had even arrived! When you're paying North of $50 for any dish there's a reasonable expectation it comes with a significant side (vegetables, Chips, Mash - something reasonably easy but certainly not alfalfa ("watercress"). Need a greater range of Tap Beers (there's only 4-5) and you should be offering Pints. No point in having a Draft Beer if it's essentially the same size as a bottle but marginally more expensive. Right?! Also, unsure if the Lines has been calibrated correctly as seemed high on CO2. Cocktails were very...
