Update- Aug 2022.. Decided to go back to John St Cafe after 9 months from last visit. This time I have increased my review from 1 star to 3 stars and reasons why? Had John's big breakfast and was very nice, tasty, substantial. Staff very friendly, accommodating with food substitutes and prompt with service Lastly thr thing that stopped me from giving a 5 star review was the coffee. They don't have lactose free milk which is the closest to normal milk but without lactose. They have horrible soy, oat or almond milks which just don't substitute normal milk at all. I would think with most places now having lactose free milk that John St Cafe would do the same. If they put a sign up stating they did lactose free milk & carried it for a while, they would see how much milk they would use. Plus lactose free milk frothes much better. Worth I try guys
Have been here a few times in the past and always had good, prompt service however this time was terrible. Firstly we ordered coffees and they got mine wrong and they forgot the other one. We also ordered a burger with fries. Once we finally got the burger it was very tasty except the serving of fries was a tiny bowl and only half filled with fries. We ordered another serve of fries. The burger took almost 45 mins to come after ordering and asking twice during that time that we are still waiting on our food. The table next to us also had similar issues with them not getting their order right and still taking ages to fix it. Must have been having a bad day there, or new staff not knowing what they are...
Read moreA friendly and family feel cafe with a large range of breakfast and lunch items. The cafe itself is spacious with an indoor/ outdoor vibe and a small terrace feel out the front on a slanted roadside. The outside seating is ok, but definitely not ideal with the slant of the path. Ok for coffee not for a meal. The indoor area is very clean and warm, with capacity for a larger group and from what I know they have a private function room out the back for maybe 10 people, but overall the cafe isn't suited to maybe more than about groups of 6. The food is well presented, tasty an well priced. The coffee is a very nice blend and well made. this is an ideal cake and coffee destination with wonderful deserts and cafe style options inside. The cafe is normally pretty family friendly with a real mixed crowd inside and out. Outside was dog friendly and had coupes, young families and elderly all very much enjoying the hospitality. The service we experienced was efficient and very friendly, with clearly very proficient waitering staff who knew the menu well and were relaxed. The bathroom at this cafe are well above standard , were very clean and well kept with styling and actually made for quiet a pleasant experience. the food was very good with a solid vegetarian option and from what I understand they had vegan options also?.. the only major concern I had was the slanted tables outside, and would recommend eating inside and leave the outside dining for...
Read moreWent here on the weekend after seeing something on their online menu. When we arrived, the menu in the restaurant was completely different. I politely asked which one was correct and was met with a blunt "Oh, we haven’t updated it yet." You’d think uploading a PDF to a website would take less time than printing, laminating, and distributing new menus, but hey, what do I know?
Anyway, that wasn’t the real issue. The prices? Absolutely mental. Sure, it’s a beautiful spot in Cottesloe, but $25 for basic eggs on toast? Then, if you want to add a tomato, a slice of avocado, and some mushrooms at $5 each, suddenly you're looking at a $40 breakfast. No thanks.
After seeing the “updated” menu, we left.
For the record, when I mention the staff, I’m talking about the ones behind the counter, not the polite French girls serving tables—they were lovely.
And judging by the way they usually respond to negative reviews, I fully expect some aggressive, defensive reply. Should be entertaining.
Just another short-lived place that’ll fall apart when the owners inevitably...
