Alright, brace yourselves, because we're diving into the world of takeaways with The Great British Chippy. Now, let's not sugarcoat things here. When it comes to a chippy, you want honest-to-goodness, lip-smacking fare that'll make your taste buds sing "God Save the Queen". So, did The Great British Chippy deliver? Let's peel back the layers like a well-battered cod fillet and find out.
First off, the price. Now, I've seen enough dodgy prices in my time to fill a bloomin' fish tank, but I've got to hand it to them - The Great British Chippy knows how to keep it reasonable. For what you're getting, the value is there, my friends. Portions? You could feed a ravenous lion pride with the amount they dish out. No scrimping here, folks. We're talking generous servings that'll have you unbuttoning your trousers before you're halfway through.
Now, let's talk about the star of the show: The Fisherman's Basket. Hand-cut chips, fish nuggets, a pineapple ring, prawns, and calamari all bundled together like a tasty treasure trove from the deep blue sea. It's a medley that promises a symphony of flavors, and for the most part, it delivers. The chips? Golden, crispy, and just the right amount of fluffy inside. The fish nuggets? Nicely seasoned and fried to a satisfying crunch. And that pineapple ring? A quirky touch that adds a hint of tropical sweetness to the ensemble. As for the prawns and calamari, they're decent enough, but they don't quite reach the heights of the other elements.
Now, here comes the kicker. The drink. $5.50 for a 600ml Pepsi? Are you having a laugh? I've seen smoother transactions in a back-alley deal for Taylor Swift's unreleased album. Look, I get it, overheads and all that jazz, but that's daylight robbery, plain and simple. For that price, I better be sipping nectar from the gods, not just your run-of-the-mill soft drink.
Overall, "The Great British Chippy" earns itself a solid 4 out of 5. The food's a hit, the portions are fit for royalty, but that drink price? It's a bit of a blemish on an otherwise sterling performance. So, if you're hankering for a taste of Britain without breaking the bank, give 'em a whirl. Just maybe BYOB (bring your own...
Read moreOrdered online from a selection of hake, snapper, and cod. Sold out of cod so ordered seemingly snapper and chips which was advertised as $13.50 per serve. Get there only to be charged $18.50 and when I queried the price they said that the cheaper price was for a small size. Fair enough, but nobody made this apparent when we rang up and ordered to ask what size we'd like!!! And they are the first line items that appear on their menus online, on the printed brochure and on their menu board in the shop, so it's an easy (misleading) mistake to make. As they did not ask what size we would like, they simply gouge you by charging you more for the regular size when you turn up. I'm obviously not the first person that did this, judging by the young man filling the order and shaking his head at me. The chips were genuinely not nice as they were, soggy small pieces as others have noted. Apparently you can upgrade (at a cost) to British chips which are larger and better. This, there must be an obvious difference. And the fish most certainly did not taste like snapper, and was rubbery. Are they still allowed to call other species 'shark' in WA? Shame about the duplicitous bait and switch practices when you order, and needless to say we will not shop there or any of their branches again. Disappointing day as I took my old Mum and family there...
Read moreA big miss of the mark this time unfortunately. We love this place and we travelled over 25 kilometres for our dinner, we were very excited and so keen to have the unique fish and chips this place offers. The service scores maximum points as usual, very friendly and welcoming team who are willing to help at all times. We were given x2 mugs English tea on a cold and rainy day, was a beautiful touch to the British chippy experience.
The food this time however had missed the mark and was not worth the $71 we had paid for. The fish, squid, scallops and prawns all tasted like they had come out of a cheap frozen bag, we honestly couldn’t even finish our food. The fish inside the matter was mush, either frozen for too long or fried straight out the freezer. All the seafood just tasted like there was a big drop in quality, cheap and frozen lunch bar type of feel. Not what you’d expect from a place across the road from the ocean.
We love this place, its team and its concept so much, but for a $70+ meal, not one things was right and so it becomes a big price tag for just good service.
We would love to see it bounce back and up its quality to its original ethos...
