mushroom pie yum ,nice and warm. (:(:What a great country bakery, beautiful food selection from freshly baked cakes to toastie's, and wonderful pie's, sandwiches + coffees. All toped off with fantastically friendly staff. Great variety of hot and cold food with lots of sauces and jams made from local producers.Highly recommended Bourkies Bake House, great food and coffee. We ride there quite often from Melbourne just to have lunch.Good for a visit and sit down, or take away. Sausage roll expert in my house says the best in the world. Certainly the best bakery in this part of the Melbourne.great country bakery, beautiful food selection from freshly baked cakes to toastie's, and wonderful pie's, sandwiches + coffees. All toped off with fantastically friendly staff. We called into Bourkies Bake House for lunch, to say the place was absolutely jumping would be an understatement. It was case of everyone take a number and wait for it to be called. The line for service started outside the store door too. You can take-a-way or eat in at Bourkies. There is also large seating capacity with tables and chairs on the footpath. The staff were efficient given today's situation. After our meals we would have gone back and grabbed a couple of other things for our trip but the long queue put us off. The meals were ok for normal cafe fare and what we ordered. One of our number suspected that the pie they received might have had a bit of microwave action prior to going in the warmer as the pastry was very soft and not crispy nor holding its ‘pie’ shape. Overall though the cafe was not to bad.

Just. Don’t. We drove in to Woodend and decided to stop here for a quick lunch after reading the rave reviews of this place. I don’t know if all the five star reviewers are from a different generation or if I went to the wrong place, because the pies we had were really not great. The pastry was neither flaky nor buttery, it was just passable … maybe. The pie fillings were not quite. I’m not sure the Steak and Mushroom even had one mushroom in it. The Steak, Cheese and Bacon had all bacon and no steak - probably because bacon is cheaper than beef. This place was chock full of patrons, so they must make a killer business. I’m not sure why. The one saving grace is that in spite of how busy it was, we were served by a really nice lady. Like, really nice.

Freshness is VERY hit and miss. I’ve been more than a few times over the past month due to settling a loved one in a nearby aged care home. I can honestly say the food is so unpredictable.

The egg and lettuce sandwich was delish yet on another visit so stale that the bread actually felt like cold toast. My son loved his sausage roll but on another visit (1 out of three ) the sausage roll was so over cooked, the inside was a shriveled line leaving the pastry looking empty. My son got the emoji cupcake and it was so dry it was crumbling and brittle however my peanut butter brownie was yummy and moist. On my last visit i tried the brownie again and it tasted like old cake. The pies have all been nice , one time barely warm in the afternoon but still tasty.

Would i come back - Yes as the food is nice but for the queue sizes and price it really should be consistent. i even over heard a young staff member saying to a customer, you can have the egg and bacon for free as it’s been out all morning. That is fair call , however, just take it off display if it’s so stale you...

On Tuesday the 11th January we were on a return run from our holiday in portland Victoria too drive past a fatal road crash near the township of Woodend...once inside the bakery we were close followed by female customer and her 10 year old son clearly shaken up and upset with what we all seen only to discover she was infact the first person on the scene of the road fatality .... we were of course being supportive of this intertidal lady but was very delighted in the support the team at buries bakery as they were simply amazing in true heartfelt care and support even donating an early lunch for that poor lady that we meet that day ...we only hope this is seen and taken on board by so many others in this very crazy world we live in right now ....100 percent wounderfull caring staff here . And the meat pies and yummy deserts a big must for your travels through the region ...God bless the staff here on that horrible day ..we will be back 100 percent ..best bakery in...
