Yamba. A salty little outpost on the New South Wales coast where the sea air smells like freedom, and the pace of life runs about three beats slower than everywhere else. It’s the kind of place where you half expect to see an old Holden parked next to a bait shop and someone barefoot walking out of the surf with a mullet - both the fish and the haircut.
And then there’s The Wobbly Chook Brewery Co. A name that sounds like a punchline, but delivers like a veteran prizefighter. I wandered in for a beer, but I stayed for something far more primal - the works burger. And I don’t throw this out lightly, but this thing? It was a time machine. Straight back to the late seventies when burgers weren’t artisan - they were built. You didn’t need truffle mayo or brioche buns. You needed greaseproof paper, a hungry stomach, and both hands.
This monster required respect. A two-handed, elbows-out grip, like wrestling with a greasy, delicious beast. Inside? A thick, seasoned beef patty - none of that smashed nonsense - just real meat. Bacon, of course. Egg, fried like Mum used to on a Sunday morning. Cheese melted over it all like some kind of edible glue. Caramelised onions, lettuce, tomato, pineapple (yeah, pineapple, deal with it), beetroot - the Aussie signature - and both aioli and BBQ sauce, like it was daring you to question its loyalty to excess.
And yes, fries. Because what kind of savage serves a burger like that without a salty sidekick?
I washed it down with a schooner of their chocolate porter. Dark, malty, with enough bitterness to keep it honest. It was the kind of beer that doesn’t beg for approval - it earns it.
Yamba might be sleepy. But the Wobbly Chook? Wide awake, slinging burgers that punch you in the mouth and hug your soul at...
Read moreCame on a Wednesday afternoon. Place wasn’t busy. Maybe 20 people. Stood at the bar and waited while the 2 service staff had their conversation. Not one of them looked at me or said they’d just be a second. They continued to natter and be ignorant. Had to wait until one of the team collecting glasses came behind the bar when she asked if I was being served.
Came back this evening. 2 dudes behind the bar. Faces like thunder. Having a chat. This time there were 4 of us and we were IGNORED again while they had their chat. When one eventually asked what we wanted, there was no eye contact, no smile no nothing. The other fella went to the till, called out the price of our bill with such a tone of we had bothered him I had to ask, “sorry, is that ours” and he responded with barley a grunt.
The beer may be brewed on site and the place a bit of an institution but your staff are terrible and of this sullen too cool for school atmosphere is what you’re going for….just think how many people come for one time and one time only and will never recommend. I...
Read moreAbsolutely loved our visit to The Wobbly Chicken Company in Yamba! We dropped in on a super busy Easter Monday and were blown away by how friendly and accommodating the owners and staff were despite the crowd. The food was top-notch — the burger with the lot was juicy and full of flavour, easily one of the best burgers I’ve had in a while. The steak sandwich was next-level — tender, perfectly cooked, and packed with tasty extras. The kids smashed their meals too, which is always a win.
One of the standout features here is the beer — brewed on-site, with a great selection of craft ales. I sampled a couple and ended up taking a six-pack home, which is a great touch for beer lovers. Plenty of seating options inside and out, so whether you’re after a quick bite or a relaxed afternoon session, they’ve got you covered.
You can tell these guys care about what they do — awesome food, great beer, friendly service, and a vibe that feels local and welcoming. Highly recommend dropping by if you’re in Yamba. We’ll...
