If you're visiting or living in Yamba, do yourself a magnificent favor and experience Yum Yum.
I've tried several excellent eateries and watering holes in this surf shire, but this salty number has left an unforgettable impression.
Atmosphere: Spot on - relaxed, playlist-perfect, local, fresh and unpretentious. Wear thongs and a beach towel if you like (it's all about the menu).
Service: Perfect for the setting - order and pay at the counter. That's it, folks. Don't expect Rockpool Bar and Grill; this is Yamba, not Sydney or Byron (and hopefully never will be). The service team are cheerful and helpful, attentive and clearly understand their seafood - no doubt knowing exactly when the last trawler docked at the marina down the road. The food arrived fresh from the kitchen with a genuine smile. Delightful.
Food: A café/general store that excels. Everything is fresh, hand-picked, locally sourced (nothing on the menu from beyond a 100km radius) and generous. I can guarantee Yum Yum warrants a long lunch. Stay the course, savor the crunch, bite into the moment and enjoy hours at this Yamba delight. The bill won't shock. The quality of food reminds me of a talented great aunt who catches her own fish and grows vegetables in her backyard. Wow.
Highlight: Try the Greek lamb burger with grilled eggplant and halloumi. Pair it perfectly with a Queensland Granite Belt Albariño.
Don't miss the homemade slices inside. My Aunty Jan would have been impressed with their house-made jam drops.
Congratulations...
Read moreNever have I ever had to pack up my food and walk out of a cafe before. A waiter seemed to be annoyed that we had asked for our food order to be amended slightly (different sides rather than what was shown on the menu), he delivered our food with a face on him and put it down on the table abruptly, we asked if he could have some ketchup to which he walked away shaking his head. When he came back we asked what was wrong, he was clearly stumped that we’d confronted him about his attitude and he responded by saying that we should have ordered everything at once... So FYI, it’s not okay to ask for anything else once you’ve ordered in this restaurant - it must make his job as a waiter really hard. He replied “this isn’t a fine dining service, we’re not a restaurant, it’s a cafe”, Haha, what a way to represent the company you’re working for. We felt so humiliated by this guy in front of the other customers around us so I advised I can take or leave the food but either way we weren’t paying today. Had to leave half my salad behind and just packed up my chips and left mid lunch. Chips were good at...
Read moreI have really enjoyed this cafe a number of times, although I really don't find metal chairs comfortable so end up having to try to remember to take some cushions or a blanket to sit on. It is a little on the high side from a $$$ perspective for me personally, however I found the food to be absolutely excellent and worth it if budget is not a factor. They do a very good Chai Infusion in a decent size pot. I only wish they served all day breakfast as this option caters to kids more easily. The building is set up with a range of different indoor rooms and both front and back outdoor seating. It's super quaint and the staff are lovely. The lunch I had for my birthday (see photo) was...
