Chez Marie — Restaurant in Durbuy

We stumbled on this restaurant due to a recommendation from our b&b host. We entered the restaurant and were immediately surprised by how fancy it looked, so we were a bit afraid our wallets were going to suffer. Immediately after, a very friendly server greeted us. He was fluent in French, Dutch and English which made it really easy for us. He sat us down and we glanced over the menu. The price for three courses was only 45 euros – a surprise to us, so we decided to get a starter, main course and dessert. The atmosphere gave us the idea that this would be an amazing experience. The lights gave a calming vibe, the people were quiet... All in all, a really good start.

After ordering our dishes, we were surprised by a delicious appetizer. While I’m usually not a fan of paté, I absolutely loved this. The crunchy toast combined with the savoury taste only reinforced our initial feeling; This definitely was going to be amazing.

Some time after that, we got our starter. My carpaccio arrived and I was just stunned. It looked so fancy! I combined everything – the toast as a base, with a small piece of meat on top. A bit of paste, (fake) caviar and sauce and to top it off, a leaf of arugula. I can’t really describe the taste except for saying that it was the most delicious dish of carpaccio I ever ate. The only downside was that there wasn’t more! My girlfriend chose the sushi dish. The sauce was slightly spicy, but really tasteful. The rice was cooked perfectly and the smoked salmon just as salty as needed. All together, it was an amazing mix of different flavors.

For our main course, we chose the steak and the ribs. I am not exaggerating when I say that it was the best steak I ever had. It was really tender and juicy; the taste melted in my mouth. The crust had a slightly grilled taste, perfectly flavored and the sauce was an amazing addition. The ribs were glazed with honey which gave it a slightly sweet taste and they sled right of the bone; There was no meat stuck on the bone, even when you just pulled it of the bone with a fork. It was paired with a side of risotto which also tasted great.

To end our fantastic dinner, I had a simple ice cream with strawberries with a delicious sweet, alcohol induced strawberry sauce. While it wasn’t as special as the previous courses, it still tasted great. My girlfriend was eager to taste the chocolate ravioli when she saw it on the menu. She loves both pasta and chocolate, and was amazed when she actually got her chocolate pasta. I can’t quite describe how it tasted – it tasted like both pasta and chocolate at the same time. The ravioli itself was filled with a chocolate paste. This was all presented in a vanilla sauce with a scoop of vanilla ice cream in the middle.

All in all, this was by far the best dinner experience we’ve had in our life. We paid around 50 euros each for four courses and drinks. The calming atmosphere only added to that experience. Just because of this, we’ll definitely be making a trip to Durbuy a...

Normaal gesproken neem ik nooit de moeite om een beoordeling achter te laten, maar de ervaring bij Chez Marie is mij/ons zo goed bevallen dat ze de waardering dik verdienen. Wij kwamen zonder reservering aan en konden direct geholpen worden. De bediening deze avond bestond uit 2 jonge mannen, waarvan 1 perfect Nederlands sprak, wat voor ons erg makkelijk was. De aankleding van het restaurant is modern-chique met een vleugje industrieel. Aangezien mijn vriendin niet een grote eter is, besloten wij om geen voorgerecht te nemen en direct een hoofdgerecht te bestellen tezamen met een drankje. Toen ons drinken werd gebracht bleek er ook nog een aperitief bij te zitten welke erg goed smaakte. Het hoofdgerecht kwam snel, en het bord was leuk opgemaakt. Ik had de steak (260gr, medium-rare) met pepersaus besteld, en mijn vriendin de steak (medium-rare) met champignonsaus in kinderportie. Naast de steak stond er een mini-frituurmandje met frieten en een schaaltje met salade op het bord. Voor mij was dit de eerste keer in een restaurant dat mijn medium-rare bestelde steak ook daadwerkelijk medium-rare was. In mijn ervaring komen ze altijd medium en soms zelfs done op tafel. De steak was heel erg mals, kouwen hoefde bijna niet want het smolt bijna in de mond. De bereiding was gewoonweg perfect (de ober vertelde vooraf dat er sinds een maand een nieuwe chef-kok was, deze mag zeer zeker blijven wat mij betreft!). De pepersaus was ook goed van smaak, lekker romig, fijne pepersmaak maar niet te overheersend, waardoor de malse steak goed tot zijn recht kwam. De frieten waren lekker knapperig, niet te vet en goed van temperatuur. De salade smaakte vers, en de dressing was ook erg lekker. Als dessert hadden wij beide de “Café gourmand” besteld. Dit bestond uit een glaasje vanille mouse, een kleine crème brûlée, een lava cakeje en een kleine dame blanche in een bakje gemaakt van koekjesdeeg, uiteraard vergezeld met een koffie. Dit werd ons keurig uitgelegd door de ober. Wederom was dit weer perfect het lava cakeje was lekker smeuïg en de chocolade binnenin vloeide goed. De crème brûlée was goed van smaak en de suiker goed gebrand, maar niet verbrand. De vanille mouse was lekker romig en niet te zoet. Het bakje van de dame blanche was lekker knapperig en het vanille-ijs lekker romig. Ook de koffie smaakte erg lekker, niet te bitter en zeker niet te waterig. Om een lang verhaal kort te maken, het eten was super, evenals de bediening en de prijs was erg betaalbaar. Ik heb in andere restaurants meer betaald, en minder goed gegeten.
