Apero Fish Palace — Restaurant in Ostend

Just about the best fish restaurant I ever have been to, and we only had the set lunch !! Some complimentary tuna pate with thins was an excellent hors douvres. Tangy tasty and a balance of textures. A shrimp bisque followed perfectly flavoured with loads of the tiny shrimps waiting at the bottom of the bowl. So savory but not over "fishy". Served with fresh crusty sourdough and butter. Main Course was mixed fish/shellfish in a cream sauce with grilled cheese on top, large chunks od cod, salmon, large juicy prawns awashed with cream sauce and hot bubbling cheese grilled on top, served with fresh crispy fries. All Washed down with the large glass of chardonnay, as recommended by the very convivial and multi lingual owner, an ex travel writer. We came in here on a recommendation from the Hotel we were staying at, hoping to discover something off the beaten track and away from tourist attractions. Well... it was all that and more !!!

As you enter it looks more like a fish market, there is a large display where I believe it is possible to purchase freshly caught fish, all kinds of shell fish, clams, mussels, oysters, shrimp, lobsters, crabs and the rest.

It operates also as a restaurant with a tapas bar concept, enabling the consumer to choose whatever he desires and for those who can't decide, just take the Royal platter or ask the lovely staff for advice.
