Avoid. Avoid. Avoid. Unless you like micro aggression with a dash of racism.
The waitress seemed quite inexperienced and looked quite confused throughout our visit. No one spoke English but of course we didn’t come with this expectation; we have been getting on on the island just fine with our limited Portuguese, Google translate, and some locals speaking English.
Coming from London, we do our best to learn the language of the places we visit, but obviously we wouldn’t be fluent. She was telling us how much something cost and we agreed to pay but she proceeded to say “how can you come to Brazil without knowing Portuguese”. Obviously this is a disgusting and grossly inappropriate comment to make and we understood what she said clearly because we happen to be learning Spanish.
You can’t work in the tourism industry and say this to someone’s face. I explained this to her via Google translate and advised her to not say this to other people’s faces as it’s rude but she stood by her comment and did not apologise. She was just very ignorant and arrogant. She seemed to think it was an acceptable comment to make but it is just a reflection of her inexperience in her job I guess. Hopefully with time she gets better at her job or changes industry.
Otherwise, food was good. Drinks were lovely but the “relax” drink we got the second time tasted very sour and watered down compared to the first. Atmosphere was beautiful. It was just our micro-aggressive and racist waitress who let our...
Read moreIt couldn't be worse! I asked for a Mushroom Risotto to take away. The waiter charged me the service fee for no reason because I didn't eat at the place and he didn't serve me anything. After my payment, he said that he forgot to charge me the packaging fee which, according to the Brazilian Consumer Defense Code (Artigo 39, V Código de Defesa do Consumidor), this practice is an improper charge. I tried to explain that this was an illegal practice to the owner of the restaurant and she said that it is a practice in Rio, however, in the restaurants next door, no one charged us this fee. When I opened the package at the hotel to start eating, I was much more upset. There were no mushrooms and it was very salty, that is, I basically paid dearly for rice. I was so angry that my hunger went away, I wasted money for nothing and I definitely don't recommend this...
Read moreWorst caipirinha I've had in Brazil (and I've had many over a three-weeks trip) They don't even use real fruit, just a weird-tasting juice. To be completely honest, we read the reviews beforehand and decided to come here anyway, just for the experience. We were very satisfied with it. It took quite a long time for the drinks to arrive, and it took even longer when the waitresses mixed up our order with a table next to us, giving them my passion fruit caipirinha. I then overheard them saying they requested a mango caipirinha. Instead of making up for the mistake, they brought me the mango caipirinha meant for the other table. The funniest part was that the waitress said "Here's your mango caipirinha... oops, I meant passion fruit". Definitely recommend it if you want a funny experience and you have a bit of time and money to waste during your stay in...
