Maya Café — Restaurant in Região Geográfica Imediata do Rio de Janeiro

The Maya Café is a cute coffee shop, where the locals meet. Although close to Flamengo and Botafogo and the Christ statue of course, it’s located in Laranjeiras, a little off the beaten track, and so I guess very few tourists visit this place. And this is the very reason why I like it…therefor it’s authentic, cozy, and nice, also and in particular in times of Carnival, when the whole city fills up with people from around the world and gets super-crowded and “a little” crazy.

The main room of the Maya Café is actually quite small but decorated with all kind of interesting things ranging from art to pictures from the old days, while playing relaxing smooth jazz and subtile Brazilian music. I decided to visit the Maya Café for its vicinity to the Rua Stefan Zweig, a small street close by dedicated to Stefan Zweig, one of the major Austrian-Jewish writers of the 20th Century, who had to flee for obvious reasons from Europe at time via USA to finally Brasil, where he died some years later some 60 kilometers outside of Rio City.

The staff is very friendly though you better brush up your Portuguese language skills. The Wi-Fi is free and you just need to apply with your social media account and the like.

My meal was a Benedito, a delicious slice of crispy baguette with rolled slices of ham and a yummy herb sauce on top of it. The Benedito I had together with a delicious Cappuccino coming with a caramel cream topping.

For dessert I had a Damasco Tart, a refreshing fruit tart.

A Hidden Gem Worth Discovering

This local spot is truly a hidden gem! The atmosphere is cozy and welcoming, and the food is absolutely top-notch. Every dish I tried was perfectly cooked, especially the salmon—it was tender, flavorful, and done to perfection. The desserts were just as impressive: rich, delicious, and clearly made with care. Highly recommended for anyone looking to enjoy a great meal in a charming local setting. The wait staff were professional , helpful and attentive ! Massive selection of wine Service was quick and meals were hot . I ate here almost everyday after I discovered it. Prices were reasonably priced. Recommend dishes - everything !!!! There's also a book exchange

The food quality and deserts are excellent! ... Mudando a minha avaliação para trazer algo que me aconteceu anos atrás. Eu pedia muito, mas MUITO MESMO no Maya, assim como ia frequentemente com amigas e com meu namorado que é gringo quando ele estava no Brasil. Isso aconteceu antes da pandemia, por volta de junho/julho 2019. No início do mês de junho, eu fui com um grupo de amigas que moram por ali no bairro de Laranjeiras, não lembro muito bem o que consumimos, mas eu sempre consumia bastante. Lembro-me que paguei com R$100 que havia pego de uma casa de câmbio, pois o meu namorado estava chegando e troquei dinheiro de dólar para reais. Nesse meio tempo, ele chegava por volta de 2 ou 3 semanas após esse evento, eu cheguei a pedir no iFood (agora não entregam mais na minha área, e depois do que vou relatar, vocês vão entender o motivo de nunca mais pisar ou pedir desse local).

Passa um tempinho, meu namorado estava aqui, fomos ao Maya tomar café da manhã. Ambos gostávamos do lugar, embora na época tivesse uma garçonete loira que vivia destratando os clientes. Consumimos. Essa desquerida chegou na minha mesa na frente de todos me acusando de ter pago com uma nota de R$100 FALSA, era quase 1 mês depois que eu havia estado lá. Eu fiquei em choque pela acusação e pelo constrangimento. Eu liguei para uma amiga minha que é advogada, e a mesma me disse que eu não tinha alguma obrigação de pagar NADA, pois não teria como provar que a nota era realmente minha ou não! Somente com o n° de série da nota teria como provar que a tal nota era falsa.

Analisando os fatos: Se a tal nota fosse realmente minha e, nesse meio tempo, eu fiz um pedido pelo iFood e havia feito mais de 50 pedidos até então, era cliente fiel, por quê não comunicar e me cobrar durante o tal pedido delivery o inconveniente da "nota falsa"?

Como seria possível pegar "nota falsa" de uma casa de câmbio oficial? Se trata da PM Turismo localizada na Av. Rio Branco 124, sempre troquei dinheiro lá.

Detalhe: Eu sou negra, vocês têm noção do tamanho da bosta que vocês fizeram? Eu era uma das clientes que mais consumia ali e recomendava o local. Não consigo pensar que só pode ter sido um caso de RACISMO EXPLÍCITO!

Falei o acontecido com outras amigas e uma delas me relatou que algo parecido aconteceu com ela quando ela foi com o marido e um casal de amigos uma vez, quando ela retornou com o marido em outra ocasião, uma atendente foi cobrar dela acusando que o casal de amigos não pagou a conta de meses atrás. Outro detalhe, ela também é negra.

Seria isso um tipo de padrão de atendimento de vocês? Li outros comentários que acusam vocês de racismo, não pode ser uma mera...
