Philthy Philly's — Restaurant in Ajax

Service: The cashier/Cook was really nice. She was patient while my wife and I took our order. I can't complain. However, she gets minus points because she grabbed raw meat with a gloved hand and proceeded to cook without changing the gloves or washing her hands up until dressing the sandwich. Not a good look.

Atmosphere: The place itself is small and it was a little disheveled when we got there. Not horrible, but not very inviting to eat in. The worst part of the place was the cleanliness of the kitchen. The oil in the fryer looked black which would indicate that they haven't replaced the oil for a very long time. I've worked in fast food before and that oil looked disgusting. Underneath their griddle, there appeared to be oil spilling over from the trap. I couldn't get a good look, but oil traps don't spillover like that unless somebody knocked it over or they haven't emptied it for a long time. It's one or the other but either way, not appropriate.

Food: My wife and I got a chicken philly steak and a Bronx Chopped cheese. The chicken philly steak was kind of dry, probably wouldn't get it again. The Bronx chopped cheese was pretty good. Bread was soft and the beef was decently moist. We also got an original poutine and that was pretty disappointing. She freshly 'cooked' the fries in the aforementioned black oil for probably a minute which is suspiciously short. The fries looked cooked but after getting home, the fries were well undercooked. Yesterday, Aug 21, 2025 at around 7:20 pm, my hubby was craving poutine, hubs suggested Philty Phil’s. I was skeptical because I’ve tried another restaurant in Ajax (I shall not name that place) and the poutine was okay. When I went into the establishment, I was greeted warmly by a gentleman, I think he’s the owner; I didn’t realize that the fries are freshly made. The order was a “philty” sized peppercorn steak and a medium sized cheesy perogi, both poutines. The prices are fair, especially for the times we live in. The gentleman was very polite and courteous. I didn’t realize this establishment has been here in Ajax for three years. I said thank you and paid, left to go home. When hubby and I opened our poutines, the smell was divine!! Both poutines were 10/10!! The portion sizes are generous!! I couldn’t eat all of my poutine and will be having it for dinner tonight!
