Mother’s Day Disaster – Never Coming Back

*Second Edit – In response to the owner's ongoing, rude responses:

We’re locals and eat out on the Coast regularly, but we’ve intentionally avoided your restaurant until now because of your inflated prices. We dine at Mama’s Japanese Kitchen next door every few weeks because the food is excellent, the prices are fair, and the customer service is always welcoming. Your continued edits and responses to this review only reinforce the impression that you're more interested in defending yourself than addressing valid customer feedback. The dismissive tone and lack of accountability in your replies just show how little regard you have for your customers. I'm glad I left an honest review. Others deserve to know how poorly you treat people who pay ridiculously high prices to dine at your restaurant.*

Edit - my response to the restaurant owner: You’ve just proven my point—your customer service is so poor that even after reading my review, you still can’t bring yourself to apologize beyond "sorry for that!" It’s disappointing, and honestly, you should be ashamed of treating customers this way.

This restaurant was a complete fail. I've lived on the coast for several years but had never tried this place before. Since it was Mother’s Day and I didn’t want my wife to cook, I decided to order Mexican takeout and give them a shot. Big mistake.

Right from the start, the customer service was poor. When I called to place the order, they answered with just a flat “hello”—like I was calling my Uncle Bob, not a restaurant. There was zero enthusiasm or professionalism.

When I arrived, the lack of care was obvious. A young man behind the counter didn’t greet me, didn’t say a word—just stared at me like I had a third eye. I told him I was there for a takeout order. Still no response—just turned the payment terminal toward me. I paid and (unfortunately) tipped 15% to be courteous and support their restaurant. He continued to stare at me without a single word.

I asked if I should wait or if the order was ready. He silently pointed at a bag on a table. I asked if that was mine. He just nodded. I grabbed it and left, again without a thank you or even basic acknowledgement. Easily the worst customer service I’ve ever experienced.

Then it got worse. I got to the car and noticed how light the bag was. Sure enough, they forgot the vegetable tacos. I had to go back inside and wait another 5 minutes—and still not a single apology or comment. If I hadn’t caught it then, I’d have had to make a 40-minute round trip to fix their mistake.

We spent $122 (including tip), and honestly, the portion sizes were insulting. Check the pictures: we ordered veggie and chicken enchiladas. You’d think a $22.95 dish would include a decent amount of rice—nope. Barely three mouthfuls. They use small containers to make it look like more food than it is. It looked like they were rationing rice like it was a rare mineral. The soup? Also a tiny portion for the price. It should have been double the size for $14.95.

Between the high prices, ridiculously small portions, and the complete lack of basic customer service, we will never return. I have no idea how this place has good reviews—maybe the food tastes fine, but nothing else about the experience...

5-star first visit but downgraded to 4-star after second visit. Read on.

Came for dinner. Best lime margarita outside San Miguel de Allende, Mexico! Aztec’s soup was fantastic. Avocado Tostadito was pretty good but I forgot to ask to hold on the crema. My Chile Rellenos with chicken was spicy compared with my wife’s Chile Rellenos with pork. Our server explained that chicken is spiced hotter than pork in this Mexican cuisine; something I did not know. Finally, the churros were amazing. Light brown and crispy on the outside and soft and chewy in the middle and clearly freshly made! What a surprising place on the Sunshine Coast. Only minor quibble is I wish the seafood tacos were made using locally sourced fish such as halibut. Hope we can visit again before we leave the coast.

Downgrading from 5-star to 4-star after bad second visit, three days later. They lost our reservation. After 30 minutes wait, I had to go ask for glasses and bottle of water which others tables had promptly received. My wife got Tamarindo instead of the Jamaica water she had ordered and my Lime Margarita was warm as it had no ice! Thankfully, The Tacos Mole and Chilaquiles Rojo were both excellent. There was a snafu in the order but my second lime margarita which had ice and was excellent. Similar snafu with our order of churros.

Food is excellent but service can be terrible with no explanation or apology offered....

I dont know why this has good reviews. People who are giving good reviews dont know the authentic mexican cuisine.

I have tried numerous Mexican restaurants across US and Canada and this is by far the most overrated restaurants. Very bland taste.

We ordered nacho chips and they gave chips from a chips packet and worst salsa(pico de gallo) made of onions and tomatoes. There is not a pinch of lemon added.

And its too overpriced for 11$.

Just to kill my craving after eating this salsa, i went to the grocery at half moon bay and bought que pasa chips and salsa dip for the same price of 11$, which is more than satisfactory, which comfortably served 4 people.

While driving back from Katherine Lake, the only reason we stopped at this restaurant on a Sunday afternoon at 3 pm was because it was shown 'open' in the maps and has good reviews.

Also, we tried chicken enchiladas which is 25$ and the portion size is very less for that price. Just because this is located in an island does not mean they can rip off people. Very bland taste but the chicken filling and green sauce ( salsa verde ) is decent.

Downtown Vancouver has premium mexican food at the same price, with good...

Mission accomplished...barely! While exploring British Columbia, my daughter was at times in the throes of completing projects for the 4th term of her Northwestern grad school program. On the day we were exploring the rugged Sunshine Coast with limited services including two ferry rides, we knew we had to find a quiet place for her with decent wifi at 4pm for a Zoom presentation with classmates. We hit a speed bump when a 50-minute ferry ride was delayed 3-1/2 hours after the navigation system went down. We were left with a little over half an hour to find a town and quiet place with decent wifi after we reached the other shore. Enter Mel, the gracious owner of Aquí Es México restaurant in Madiera Park. We explained our situation, Mel said his wifi was pretty decent, and gave my daughter a quiet corner table for her Zoom call while we were 'forced' to drink tasty margaritas with chips and guacamole. She came through as always and her professor and classmates said she had the best background by far of anyone on the Zoom call! We celebrated with a scrumptious Mexican dinner. Thank you, Mel and Aquí Es México. You rock!
