Chicken For You is a delightful little mom & pop restaurant that makes Korean fried chicken. If you like the family-owned vibe where everyone takes pride in what they do then you owe it to yourself to check this little place out. The heart-felt customer service was top notch and considerably better than what you would get at KFC.
The restaurant itself is a modest little place in an old building located just a couple blocks from NAIT. If you’re looking for the Hotel Macdonald then this isn’t it. But if you don’t mind a quaint fast-food joint then you’ll be just fine.
We ordered the sweet & hot fried chicken and the chicken quesadilla. The fried chicken was some of the best I’ve ever had. It was tender and moist with an extra crispy crunch. It was full of flavour and the whole sweet & hot thing was pretty intense. If you don’t like spicy, you might want to try one of their other varieties because this chicken has some serious heat. Portion-wise, it was huge and could have easily fed three people. The chicken quesadilla was considerably milder, but even it had noticeably more kick that what you would get at a Taco Bell.
What can I say? I’ll...
Read moreOwned by a middle aged Korean couple. It said they closed at 8, and we arrived at 7:30 wondeirng if it was still okay, since places like this tend to deny people when it's close to closing time. Not only were we still allowed to dine, but the lady was incredibly friendly, and there were customers coming in after us who still got the same service, some coming in even after 8! That's a big plus right there.
I love hole in the wall places, and this was definitely one of them. The entire place looked like a 90s diner was decorated by a 10 year old with a $50 budget to the dollar store. So naturally, I was pretty excited.
The popcorn chicken is really good, actually probably some of the best in the city. Their fried chicken is... pretty standard. It's good, but nothing crazy. Their Japchae though? Amazing. It had a home cooked taste and feel to it, which you don't want in restaurants, unless of course, you've never had homecooked Japchae, then it's a very welcome change.
They also serve a lot of western food such as sandwiches and burgers with fries, but I don't know how that is. I'll have to try...
Read moreWhy have I not heard of this place until now?? The chicken is perfectly crispy on the outside and unbelievably juicy on the inside. We ordered the mild fried chicken meal combo with fries for my kid, and the “swicy” (sweet and spicy) saucy fried chicken and bulgogi to share.
The bulgogi was delicious and tastes like Korean comfort food. Basically a wholesome, home-cooked stir fry that I’d imagine my mom or grandma to make, if I were Korean.
The swicy chicken was loaded with sauce, and more sweet than spicy. Very juicy and even the cuts that usually tend to be drier were not dry.
It was a lot for us to finish so we took it home, and the leftovers from my kid’s chicken was still juicy and delicious after reheating the next day. That was the ultimate test for me and I’m now completely sold on this place. I think I even liked the dry crispy chicken even more than the saucy one.
Note that there is not a lot of seating in the actual restaurant, it’s more of a pickup and takeout place. But if you do stay, the service is warm and friendly and there’s nonstop K-pop...
