Caffè Piada — Restaurant in Baie-Saint-Paul

We arrived expecting to enjoy a nice Italian dinner and were immediately disappointed by the awful service. Other than me and my wife, the only other guests was a noisy crowd of about 6 drunk middle aged women. The staff, which consisted of two very young women, seemed overwhelmed and ignored us at the entrance for several minutes, while they delivered more drinks to the roudy table and kept dropping things in the kitchen. Finally I approached one and asked if we could sit. She said yes and brought just one food menu and one drink menu. We sat for about 15 minutes waiting for someone to come take our drink order or at least offer us water, but they completely ignored us despite our sitting just 10 meters away. The setting was also not very pleasant with a strong smell of poorly vented smoke in the back and a series of Italian groceries for sale along the walls and shelves. At the front the noisy cars on the street were the dominant sound aside from the cackling drunk group. We ended up walking out without ever being asked what we wanted. Maybe it was just a bad night but the service was among the most impolite and unwelcoming I've ever experienced. I guess that's authentic Italy in some way. Avoid if possible. There's plenty of impeccable service from the dozen other restaurants just a block or two away. No point...

The food is wonderful, the atmosphere is perfect, and the service we experienced was top notch. My wife, myself, and our one year old stopped in on a whim for lunch this week and we had the entire place to ourselves. I didn’t get the girls name, but she was running the show that day… hosting, waiting, and cooking all by herself. It was within an hour of her closing but she welcomed us in with a smile and open arms.. We are from the US, and don’t speak French, She also took a few minutes to make sure we understood the menu before we ordered.
