Three of us were here for dinner August 31st, 2024. Meh.

The reviews were good so we gave it a try. The people saying the service was excellent must have been at a different restaurant. Overall, the meal was disappointing.

The decor is dated, but at least it was clean. The location is in a busy spot downtown. There is a small parking lot but it was full. There is parking on the street as well, but that was also full.

We were sitting for quite a long time before our server came over. She seemed to be in a rush and must have left her personality at home that day. Twice she left the table so quickly that we had to wait for her come back to finish giving our order. She didn't really engage with us at all.

I ordered mushroom caps to start. It should just say mushrooms because the stems were included. You can tell they were homemade (battered in house). They might have been good if they weren't so greasy. The oil in the fryer needed changing. You could smell the dirty grease smell that anyone who has worked in restaurants will recognize immediately. They come with plain sour cream, unlike most places that serve with a flavored dip.

The mushroom schnitzel itself was okay, not great. It was a good portion size and it was crispy. The potatoes and veg it came with, though, were underwhelming. Just an ice cream scoop of bland mashed potatoes and some unseasoned veg that looked like the stuff you get in a bag in the freezer section of the grocery store.

All in all, I can't recommend this restaurant. Eating out is an expensive luxury these days. There are much better places around and we...

My husband and I live in a small little town about a 40 minute drive from The Grainary Restaurant. We were there once for a meal seated in the restaurant itself and have also ordered take out several times. The staff is very friendly and knowledgeable about the menu. I have to admit I am sometimes very difficult to impress. Let me tell you I am VERY IMPRESSED. The portion size was perfect, the veggies still had a slight crunch to them. I could go on about that meal but I won’t . It was definitely worth the drive. The main reason I’m writing this review is because of their takeout service! Unfortunately I am now mostly bedridden. I had a craving for Schnitzel and thought we would checkout The Granary for takeout. Let me tell you, I was so impressed about the meal that I have to tell everyone, Perfectly cooked schnitzel, the mashed potatoes are real and to me the best part, brazed red cabbage , just like my mom used to make.I also ordered mushroom sauce and I got mushroom sause! It was so creamy with LOTS of sliced mushrooms!! It was like my mother was in the kitchen and made everything!!! Portions just like home, seasoning like home, everything was great! I was again VERY IMPRESSED!!!!!! If you want a bit of home, a menu with plenty of choices and a meal that won’t break the bank, go toTHE GRANARY SCHNITZEL HOUSE RESTAURANT ! It’s just like mom is in...

This place was fantastic. Ever since the Lindenhoff closed in ottawa, finding traditional German food has been difficult. Although it’s not a close drive (99 minutes by highway, 2 hours for the scenic route), we went the long way and enjoyed the fall foliage.

Parking is minimal, but lots of road side parking for free. Fully accessible with a ramp if needed.

I had the traditional Weiner Schnitzel with fresh veggies and a side of Spätzle.

My wife had the mushroom version of both.

Mine was fantastic/ the schnitzel was perfectly done with. A nice crunchy exterior full of flavour and a moist interior.

The veggies were standard with not Much seasoning if any. Added some butter to liven them up.

The spätzel was delicious. Buttery and warm.

My wife’s was equally as good except for the mushroom sauce/ it had little flavour, no seasoning of any kind. She needed a whole ton of salt and pepper to make it enjoyable.

We shared an Apple strudel for desert which is large enough for two, piping hot with a large dollop of vanilla ice cream.

In the end the major issue was we were told reservations are encouraged (not mentioned anywhere in their website) and said we could have a table but gave us an hour to order and eat.

So be aware. For us it was still a great meal. But maybe not for a...

This place has the most amazing authentic schnitzel, spetzel, and sauerkraut!!! The sauerkraut is homemade and served warm, I would even feed it to my Dutch grandma it’s so good! Also, if you manage to leave room for desert, I got the Viennese Cheesecake which is to die for, and my mom was in love with their apple strudel. The Granary is also sooooo good about accommodating allergies! Since pretty much everything is homemade, they know what’s in every single menu item, and were able to safely accommodate my anaphylactic citrus allergy (which is impressive, most restaurants can’t). Definitely stop by and grab some lunch and dinner if you’re in the area (a reservation wouldn’t be a bad idea depending on the time of day) and you should even feel comfortable taking your persnickety Dutch/German/Austrian grandparents here. P.S. Don’t forget to add an order of sauerkraut, it’s a huge portion for the family to share and some of the best I’ve found in Canada! P.P.S. Sorry no pictures of the actual meals, it all disappeared too fast for that, lol.

Stopped in here yesterday (Sunday 13 June 2021) on a little motorcycle touring trip around the area. Was pleasantly surprised by the prompt service, friendly nature of our server (Phyllis). Aa well as the outstanding flavour of the food. We were seated quickly and our server gave us a great recommendation on an appetizer (spinach dip). She clamed it was the best she ever tasted ... big statement! We've asked for her favourite dish and she pointed out the Zwiebel Schnitzel. So we opted to try that instead of some of the other recommended highlights on Google reviews. We were not disappointed, the Schnitzel was absolutely outstanding and the spinach dip was definitely full of flavour and had excellent pita chips. Overall, I thought it was a an standing eating experience and the server was super polite, friendly an attentive. I would definitely return for the Zwiebel ... the fried onions and buttery gravy was on point!
