Manchu Wok, a staple in food courts across shopping malls, has always sparked a bit of curiosity and nostalgia in me. Nestled in Mapleview Mall, this spot is somewhat of an emblem for those who frequent food courts, often conjuring a mix of comfort and caution with its offering of generously sweetened dishes. Recently, I decided to break from tradition; instead of the usual walk-up order, I opted for delivery, a choice that brought the familiar tastes of Manchu Wok right to my doorstep.
Manchu Wok is known for its fast Chinese cuisine, which can often feel rushed and commercially catered—traits that are not entirely absent in their delivery service. The menu features a plethora of options, from Shanghai noodles to sweet dishes and peppered beef, all shadowing the typical offerings of a food court Chinese stall. However, the food carries a distinct taste—a somewhat artificial tang coupled with an overwhelming sweetness that might not cater to all palates.
Despite these shortcomings, the food from Manchu Wok brings a certain guilty pleasure. It's not something I would indulge in regularly, but the occasional dive into their take on Chinese cuisine is a welcome deviation from the norm. The comparison to Mandarin is inevitable, though Manchu Wok's dishes come off as less authentic, possessing a "fake" taste that might put off some enthusiasts of traditional Chinese food.
Price-wise, Manchu Wok stands on par with other Chinese eateries like Mandarin, offering both large made-to-order and smaller takeaway options, making it accessible regardless of one's hunger or budget. In terms of value, it fits the bill for a quick and easy meal solution without much fuss.
On a broader scale, rating Manchu Wok can be tricky. If I were to judge it against all dining experiences, it would likely land at the lower end of the scale—a mere 1 out of 10. However, when placed in the context of typical Canadian Chinese food or general food court fare, it comfortably earns a 3 out of 5 stars. It's not outstanding, but it serves its purpose well, providing a decent meal that pairs surprisingly well with hot sauce for those few times a year when fast, sweet, and easy...
Read moreI will always support this business. It is over 20yrs family owned and customer service is always 10/10. My partner and I come here all the time and I’ve been coming here since I was a kid. food is always fresh and portions are great.
not really understanding all the bad reviews. It’s Chinese fast food it’s going to be a little bit salty But I’ve never had a meal that wasn’t fresh. In regard to the price, You are literally watching the staff prepare your meal if you’re not happy with the portion and say something.. again, I’ve never had small portions at this location they are always good sizes relative to the price. Any new item or food I wasn’t sure about, I’ve always asked for a sample and was able to try it before getting it on my plate. Going out for food is expensive in general in 2025 if you can’t afford it then eat at home. If you’re not satisfied with the meal, the staff and management at this location are very reasonable and if you went back and said something Instead of complaining online I’m sure they would be happy to fix the issue.
It’s five stars for me. Food is delicious fresh and good portions. One of the original food court restaurants at Mapleview mall and for a reason !!!! Please ignore the bad reviews. This location is...
