EDIT: Sad that I have to update my review, but I have seen a steady decline in quality here over the past two years or so. Ordered 2 donairs a few days ago (was looking forward to my sammys fix), but was very very disappointed. The meat was freezing cold and old, and pita was also cold. Bad enough that they now microwave the meat most times and rarely ever freshly shaved. On top of that the price appears to have gone up significantly. 35$ now for 2 donairs and 2 chocolate milk!? And they charge $1.50 for hot sauce. I realize that costs have gone up, and I would be happy to pay that if the quality was what I remember, but it is not even close, and I cannot justify that much money for such inferior quality food. Saddens me to say that I don't think I will be returning here any time soon and it's a shame because I used to really look forward to having a sammys when I come home to Ontario. Also a side note that the store is looking really run down , holes in walls, front store sign is all discolored with some nasty looking black goo, and the washrooms were actually disgusting ( dead bugs and cobwebs , grime all over). Made my skin crawl. It was never really that clean but come on guys, you can do much better. Also not impressed to see a right wing borderline conspiracy theorist newspaper is now being distributed in the store. Sad state of affairs.

Old review: Sammys makes the best donairs ever!!! Warning though that they are highly addictive. Pretty messy but there is nothing quite like these donairs, the sauce is like no other. I live out east now in New Brunswick and everytime I'm back home in Ontario this is one of the first places I stop! Last time I was home for 2 weeks in April and went there three times! Haha puts the east coast donairs to shame , I can't even eat them out here , not sure what the hype is about the east coast donairs anyhow because they are garbage compared to Sammy's!! Highly recommend, you won't be...

I've been a SAMMY'S FAMOUS DONAIR customer since the late 1980's (!!!) and used to love love LOVE their food. For so many years they always hit the spot with a uniquely spiced meat and decent sized portions. Over the past 5 years, the quality has really started to slip. First, the prices kept creeping up more and more, to the point where it takes about $15 to get a decent-sized donair with a bottle of water. For a single sandwich, that's insane. BUT you know what? I'd still go and pay that money if the donairs tasted the same as they used to. Sadly, that's not the case. As the prices crept up and the sizes seemed to diminish, the TASTE and QUALITY of the donair-meat seems to have... changed. It's just not the same. I can't put my finger on it (yes, WEEN reference!), but the flavour seems to have faded away. Where there used to be a distinct spiced flavour to the meat, it's just generic and salty now. It's very sad to me, this place has been a part of my life for so long, but the last time I went (Feb. 2015) was the third disappointing experience and it will be the last one. I can't be giving away so much money for such sub-standard food. RIP Sammy's.

*EDITED TO ADD * I gave them ONE MORE SHOT about two weeks ago. The woman behind the counter who took my money (in rubber gloves) then went on to help make the donair. I repeat, the woman who wore rubber gloves to help keep her hands clean from handling money then used those same disgusting rubber gloves to help make my donair. Screw this disgusting place,...

While you do get A LOT of donair in your wrap, at over $10 apiece, that is too much for food of that quality when it doesn't even come with a side or even a drink. They liberally douse the wrap in their sauce, making it messy, if not impossible, to eat. Also, if you aren't used to or don't like sweet sauce, you definitely won't enjoy this style of donair (I do not mean this as a criticism; it's more of a "buyer beware"). I understand the benefits to the business owner for being cash only, but especially given the pandemic, I would prefer the option of contactless payment. The main reason I cannot give Sammy's a good review though, is for the simple reason that the lady behind the counter taking our order was completely miserable. She did not even acknowledge me as I approached, then finally looked up with a disdainful frown on her face. Even then, no "Hi, what can I get you?" - just silence and a grumpy disposition. You really should not be making your clients feel like they've inconvenienced you by deigning to give you their hard-earned money for a service you have...

My very first time having a Donair, thus my first time at Sammy's. The gentleman at the counter was friendly and I thoroughly enjoyed our conversation. he explained the roots of Donair, how it became a "thing" in eastern Canada and the history of his family and the restaurant. The small is sufficient (I didn't know at the time). Basically the same size pita, except with the large he PILES on the meat (he did explain this to me). And to be honest, it may be too much (I can't believe I'm saying this) While the 'sweet sauce" is what makes this uniquely Halifax.. I'm not a huge fan of it. However my girlfriend enjoyed hers. We did agree (and we're not questioning what they've been doing for over 20 years), the diced onion could be replaced with thinly sliced red opinion for a better (IMHO) product. A very clean restaurant, friendly owner, decent food and I got a culture/history lesson in the process. The microwave was a bit of a turn-off though.

“Cash Only Accepted” Luckily they have an ATM for easy Cash Withdrawal Great Prices very Inexpensive but Excellent Restaurant Quality Food I’ve been coming to “Sammy’s Famous Donair” for many Years and I always end up with quality service, exquisite decor, and some of the Most Delicious Mediterranean Food that you’ll find in Burlington nothing tastes more delicious and tasty as their Hand Rotisserie Chicken Shawarma gently put on a vertical Spit and rotating at a slow 360 degrees then gently sliced off on a silver platter and served with Sammy’s signature Sauce “Drops of Hot” and for Dessert a delicious piece of Bakhlava to Sweeten the end of a Meal also For Vegetarians I recommend the Tabbouleh Salad “excellent and friendly Staff will always assist any guests.”
