Judge and Jury Gastropub: A Great Alehouse with Room for Improvement
I recently visited Judge and Jury Gastropub, an Alehouse known for its British pub staples and globally inspired dishes. My experience was enjoyable overall, though there were a few areas for improvement.
Ambience and Service: The ambience of Judge and Jury is inviting and comfortable, perfect for a laid-back evening with friends or family. The staff was attentive and friendly, ensuring we had everything we needed throughout our meal.
Drinks: The highlight of our visit was undoubtedly the beer selection. Judge and Jury offers an impressive array of craft beers, each one better than the last. Whether you're a fan of IPAs, stouts, or lagers, there's something to satisfy every palate.
Food: The food was a mixed bag. Some dishes were outstanding, while others fell short of expectations.
Hits: The shrimp tacos were absolutely delicious. The flavors were well-balanced, and the shrimp was perfectly cooked. The onion rings were crispy and flavorful, making them a perfect accompaniment to our drinks. The nachos were another standout, loaded with toppings and bursting with flavor. Fish and chips were lipsmacking
Misses: The burger, unfortunately, didn't live up to the mark. It lacked the juiciness and flavor that one would expect from a gastropub of this caliber. The Reuben sandwich was also disappointing. The meat was dry, and the sandwich overall was quite underwhelming.
Overall Rating: 4/5 Despite the inconsistency in the food, the exceptional beer selection and the overall atmosphere make Judge and Jury Gastropub worth a visit. If they can elevate the quality of their dishes to match their drinks, this place could easily become a top destination for food and beer enthusiasts alike. I'll definitely be back for the beers and those amazing...
Read moreThis place used to have truly fantastic food. I’m not sure what happened. Some friends and I met up there for my birthday on a Monday evening (my choice because the food used to be so good) and promptly learned that it was “gluten free night.” Not “hey you can choose a gluten free bun if you want one” but “we refuse to give you a real sandwich bun for your burger or other sandwich.” This has to be the most bizarre menu choice I’ve ever encountered in over 35 years of eating in restaurants and a truly strange choice for a British style pub. I am not sure what the motivation is behind this decision but it was truly off putting.
Anyways. I decided to give one a try regardless. I like trying new things. Who knows, maybe it’ll be good. The bun (if one can call it that) left much to be desired. It collapsed faster than the Soviet Union and did not provide an enjoyable sandwich experience. The fries were also sub par. I can make better ones from scratch at home in the air fryer. Indeed, instead of the fresh cut seasoned fried I expected, these were clearly frozen, tiny little pathetic strings of potatoes, devoid of soul and satisfaction.
My one friend got the wings, which frankly I wish I had done since they did look pretty appetizing, and even he remarked on the breading noticeably being thin (gluten free.) We were a bit shocked that his plate consisted entirely of non-drumstick pieces. Drumsticks are the best ones, as anyone who eats wings knows. I’ve never seen something like that happen before.
The service was fine as was the atmosphere. I’ll be clear that none of this is the fault of the staff. But the food left pretty much everything to be desired. Something has clearly changed in this establishment and not for the better. Hopefully “gluten free” will be made optional, rather than mandatory,...
Read moreUpdate: Wow! Amazing! The food was made to perfection. Portions are huge, and extremely flavourful. Our Server was Taya. She’s on it, impeccable service. Right down to running my purse out to me. :) Thank you! As always the atmosphere is very welcoming and spotless.
Well we have been meaning to try this place out for months and decided to do so Sunday. Place is clean, staff friendly and washrooms are clean. We wanted to review the menu and asked a couple questions. Server was informative and gave us time to decide. She may have forgotten because she gave us about 15 min. None the less my husband decided on the fish and chips based on her raving review and he loved it. Said it was very good. My order was chicken Alfredo and I added mushrooms with a side Caesar salad. Sadly the menu doesn’t tell you there are onions in the Alfredo sauce which is a first for me being a pasta lover so all though it was tasty I don’t eat onions more so onions that are not properly sautéed these were basically raw. And the Cesar salad sadly was pretty wilted. I didn’t eat much of either. I did bring up the onions and it not being mentioned on the menu and she said oh yeah sorry about that. Clearly it was evident I’d hardly ate from either dish and was shocked no attempt at an alternative dish or even the fact the Caesar salad was hardly touched when I asked for take out containers. So I’d have to say it was very disappointing after wanting to stop in for so long and reviewing the reviews and menu items. Young server but still they should all be vigilant enough to notice that didn’t go over well especially when it’s mentioned. The fish and chips I’d say 5 star. Everything...
