We love discovering new cuisines, and we have realized that every culture’s food has something that feels familiar. Our first time trying Andhra Telangana food, which is known for being rich, spicy, and rice-based. Annapurna Ruchulu in Burnaby gave us such a special experience.
The restaurant is tucked away in a hidden spot, just a few minutes’ walk from the Hindu Temple, but we found it worth the visit. The food was full of flavours, spicy, and very filling — the kind of comfort food we were hoping for.
🌶 Punugulu – We enjoyed these little fried bites that looked like mini donuts. They were crispy on the outside, fluffy on the inside, and reminded us of street snacks. 🌶 Masala Dosa – We thought of this as a giant Chinese crepe with a perfect mix of crunch and softness. The potato filling gave it a warm and savoury comfort that we loved. 🌶 Goat Dum Biryani – We felt like this was the spiced-up cousin of clay pot rice. The goat meat was tender, the rice was fragrant, and the portion was hearty and delicious. My top favourite! 🌶 Mirchi Bajji – We immediately thought of Sichuan stuffed peppers, but this version was on a whole new level of spice. Every bite was bold and addictive — we definitely needed a drink refill! 🌶 Puri with Aloo Curry – We enjoyed the puffed, airy bread that reminded us of Chinese fried dough. It paired beautifully with the potato curry, which tasted homemade. 🌶 Gulab Jamun – We ended on a sweet dessert with the syrup-soaked fried doughball. They reminded us of sweet glutinous rice balls. A must if you have a sweet tooth.
Overall, we had such a unique and memorable dining experience at Annapurna Ruchulu. The dishes were spicy and bold.

Read moreI was there with my family on one of the days of their pongal special meals ( on Kanuma day). They served very traditional delightful telugu Kanuma meal with about 15 varieties, including naatu kodi, chicken currey, pulav, pulihora, beerakaya pachadi, vada, bajji, mango payasam, a many more. Serving all these varieties of food on a special banana leaf imported directly from back home is heart touching(he told me it costed 3$ each leaf to get it here).
We thank them for providing traditional mal on these festive days. The food was amazing, very tasty. it was just like home food. Not greasy and no colors. We throughly enjoyed each dish with its special home made taste. Even though it was not unlimited buffet, we could not finish all the varieties that was served on Banana leaf. We thoroughly enjoyed the home food on festive day.
Overall the price of this meal was another surprise, it was just 25$. Serving many traditional items with homely taste and nominal price shows that they are doing this as a community service and do not have any commercial interest in it on festival days. We should respect their commitment and support them to bring more traditional foods for us here.
Thank you Annapurna for making this festival very special with your traditional...
