Okay, bear with me for a bit… this post is a year in the making. Back in February of 2018, I dropped by New Lakeview Seafood in Burnaby for a revisit since it had been over 4 years since my last visit. I remembered that this place gets very busy during the lunch hour rush so I was fairly surprised that it wasn’t that busy (perhaps it was all of the snow that we had on this day).
Undeterred, I saddled up to one of the tables and ordered the Tai Pan Don Chow Mein ($9.25) which is a vegetarian soy sauce noodle dish with shiitake mushrooms, green onions, onions, and a mountain of noodles. Seriously, this was huge pile of noodles.
A few months later, I had a hankering for some wonton noodle soup so I came back for a revisit and ordered the Beef Brisket and Wonton Noodle Soup ($9). Interestingly, they brought me out a fork with my dish and they seemed surprised when I asked for a pair of chopsticks. Maybe I don’t look Chinese enough…
This is a big bowl of noodles… easily big enough to share with two people. There’s also quite a large amount of tender beef brisket in this dish. What you don’t see in the first picture is the 6 large pork and shrimp wontons underneath all of the noodles.
In keeping with the theme of this post, here’s their Special Chow Mein ($11.75) which comes with a mix of seafood and various meats (bbq pork, chicken, shrimp, squid, shiitake mushrooms, veggies, etc…). This isn’t on their lunch special menu and it seemed to take longer for them to make. Probably best to just stick with their lunch specials.
Exactly 1 year from my initial revisit in 2018, I returned to New Lakeview Seafood (interestingly enough, it was also a snowy day). The Pan Fried Beef with Rice Noodles ($11.50) is another noodle dish (this time, a broad and flat rice noodle) which I’ve always enjoyed since my childhood. Simple and satisfying… and let’s not forget the huge portion size.
If you’re looking for a place to fill up on carbs… this is a good...
Read moreThis home style Chinese restaurant has been around for many years, for as long as I can remember anyway. Though the food quality is not at, say, Kirin level, it is still decent for the price. Our family's favorite dishes there are steamed bean curd with seafood (remember to have rice with this one!), honey garlic spare ribs, crispy skin chicken, vegetables with 3 kinds of seafood, beef lettuce wrap, Peking pork chops, steamed sea bass with black bean sause. If you order their combination meals (the "wo choi" in Cantonese), they give out freebies like half a crab, depending on how many dishes you order.
Update Jun 25, 2023 - 5 years later, I'm happy to say that the original review stands true. We've added another family favorite dish: Chicken With Consommé Soup (basically steamed chicken with a ginger and green onion sauce). Prices have gone up, because of post covid inflation. A "pick 6 dishes" meal that comes with a free half crab and daily soup, costs just under $192 after tax, before tip. Both debit and credit are...
Read more3 - 4 years ago we ordered the beef brisket for takeout. The beef had gone bad- sour tasting. However we didnt bring it up to the restaurant's attention. This stopped me from ordering beef at this location for at least a year though! The restaurant did improve in the past year. We didnt experience this over the past year.
However today, we ordered the new Lakeview special bean curd menu item #21 for the first time. This is our first time trying this dish. Disappointingly the bean curd is actually bean puff - that has a sour taste. We told one of the servers and the male server told his coworkers and accused us that we ordered the same dish and complainted about the tofu before. He also stated that majority of the plate was eaten. Please note that we have quite a big table. So each person take a small portion already leads to the consumption of the majority of the plate.
Generally their price, quality and portion sizes of food are quite decent. However they sometimes use unfresh...
