A Culinary Revelation: Brass Wok is Calgary's Best Thai Restaurant.
I am writing this review with a sense of genuine excitement, as I believe I have discovered the best Thai restaurant in Calgary: Brass Wok. The food was so exceptional that I've returned with my family three times in just eight days.
Every single dish we ordered was a masterpiece of flavor. It wasn't just good; it was a revelation. The freshness was palpable—you could taste every herb and spice as if it had been picked from a garden moments before being added to your plate. While the menu offers dishes you might find at other Thai restaurants, the execution and quality at Brass Wok elevate them to an entirely new level.
Our culinary journey began with appetizers that set a high bar, like the Change Mai fresh rolls, crispy vegetable spring rolls and the perfectly grilled chicken and beef satay skewers with the most delicious peanut sauce I have ever tasted. The soups, including a coconut-based Tom Kha Gai and another rich savory Tom Yum Goong were bursting with complex flavour.
For our main courses, we were treated to a variety of stir-fries and curries. A standout was the Jungle Beef (savoury beef with green beans), Basil beef, Cashew Chicken and Red Curry with beef, each bursting with vibrant flavors and a perfect balance of textures. Even the simple-looking lettuce wraps were incredibly flavorful. We also enjoyed a beautifully plated Lime Chilli Butter Salmon that was cooked to perfection.
The meal was capped off with equally impressive desserts. The fried bananas with ice cream were a crispy warm, sweet delight, and the mango coconut sticky rice, beautifully arranged like a golden rose, was an absolute treat. There wasn't one favorite dish because every single one was a five-star experience.
What made our visits truly special was the incredible service and personal attention from the owner and her staff. She has a rare gift for hospitality, making us feel like honored guests. It was like having a personal chef attend to our table, ensuring that everything was to our liking. This personal touch is something you rarely find and it made the entire dining experience unforgettable.
Brass Wok is more than just a restaurant; it's a testament to passion and quality. I wish the owner (whose name I shall keep private) and this amazing team much success. They truly deserve it for bringing such a high caliber of authentic, fresh, and delicious Thai food to Calgary. Thank you Brass Wok, my...
Read moreEdited - New The manager called to apologize about the whole incident, which my mom and I really appreciated. They had two new people training and not enough staff, so things weren't going as smoothly as they normally would. I've never had a manager call to apologize about an incident, so she really went above and beyond and was really sweet.
I'll definitely be coming back to enjoy the great food and service.
Most of the food was really delicious. I had the Tom yum soup and drunken noodles. My mom had the Tom kha gai, shrimp fried rice, and roti.
We loved most of the food, but the fried rice was really bland and not worth it.
The horrible thing about this place was the service. We got our soups about 15 minutes after we ordered, which was nice, and then we had to wait around 40 minutes for the main. We were completely ignored by the staff.
There were people who came after us and had their starters and main before us and even paid to leave while we were still waiting for our main. None of our dishes were complicated either. The couple beside us then asked to have the rest of their food packed up, and the staff packed it up for them and brought their bill right away.
We asked if we could get the remainder to go, and they brought the boxes for us and told us to pack it ourselves. Then they didn't bring the machine to pay. We had to wait until I asked.
I felt really upset about the whole thing. We were the only Black people in the restaurant, and I just tried to give them the grace that they were busy, but everyone else was attended to in a timely and professional manner, but we weren't. I almost didn't want to leave a tip but just did anyway.
Good food but not worth the...
Read moreWas excited to try this place out based on the good reviews but ultimately left with a rather disappointing experience.
It was our turn to pick the restaurant on a friend's night out so we reserved a table and were seated right away upon arrival.
We ordered 4 dishes plus an appetizer since we were all pretty hungry and asked the server to bring the appy out quickly so we could curb our hunger and wait for the main dishes. Sadly the appy we ordered took almost an hour to arrive at our table by which time we were thinking to just leave and go elsewhere. The beef sate skewers were tasty but pretty small and surprisingly a bit undercooked.
Luckily our mains arrived only 15min later and overall the flavours were very good. We ordered the Jungle Beef which was tasty but was probably about 85% jungle and only 15% beef which was disappointing given the price of the dish.
All of the other dishes were tasty and flavourful although similarly small portions which admittedly is pretty typical nowadays for these types of restaurants.
The atmosphere is ok but seems way too crowded for my liking even though I counted only 12 tables in the place. We had to move our chairs every time one of our neighbors had to use the restroom or pay the cheque and could easily listen or join in neighboring conversations.
So overall good food, extremely slow service considering there are only 12 tables, prices a little high since the composition of dishes we ordered was protein light.
Probably wouldn't return and definitely would not recommend it based on our visit, in fact we felt bad to have suggested the place to our friends as it was not an enjoyable...
