After spending four weeks in Italy eating a lot of gelato, we thought it was time to check-out what's available in Calgary, and this was our first stop. A nice setting, clean, with good space for sitting, should you choose. A large selection of flavours, with options of cones or cups and single or double scoops. The service was friendly and efficient, even though things were busy on a Sunday evening. We found the texture of the product to be firmer than any we had in Italy. We wondered if that had to do with a lower fat content here, so it freezes harder? However, the flavours we selected were great. The lemon had a bright citrusy flavour and the strawberry tasted like fresh berries. This is s great place to enjoy gelato in Calgary and we will be back.

Came in knowing that we’d order an Affogato, however I still wanted to try some flavours before purchasing the affogato. Every single ice cream shop and gelato shop I’ve been to have no problem with letting you sample 2-3 flavours before paying. However, the guy at the till said that I absolutely had to pay first before sampling? I thought this was odd and very inconvenient. What if I had 2 flavours in mind, taste tested them and didn’t like them, and decided not to get anything? I would have already paid for however many scoops and/or a cone (as the guy wants you to pay first). This is awful customer service in my opinion. I wouldn’t come back for the customer service. On another note, he also mentioned that they make customers pay first because “if it’s busy” and he even stated “right now in this moment we’re not busy,” we get customers to pay first to help with the line. He still made me pay first, and I wasn’t even able to sample flavours because the girl was “busy.” While this makes practical sense, I do still think it reflects poor customer service. All the times in the past that I’ve visited this location, this “paying before sampling” was never a thing. The ice cream, on the other hand, always great and delicious. The affogato we had was the best flavour-wise (espresso was strong and bold, mixed VERY well with the vanilla bean ice cream), but the scoop of ice cream was quite small (seemed smaller than a child’s size…). For $8, it was very expensive, but the flavours and satisfaction were there! Would return for the ice cream, would NOT return for customer service.

Established in 1929! And it is still there, what that tells me? Good reputation. I stopped here for the first time, this a welcoming cafe, diner, ice cream shop and a great place to socialize. Staff were nice, professional and friendly. I had an Americano with warm milk on the side, and pastry, it was what I expected to be, real Italian served. Obviously they are famous for gelato, ice cream and sorbet but for me it is a great coffee shop and will be going back again. All and all, if you are looking for a good cup of coffee, latte, cappuccino, pastry, beers, sandwiches, ice cream and good atmosphere stop by here. You won’t be disappointed. It is a legendary and operating since 1929. Impressive!

Ice cream and gelato are like your best friends. They are there when you have to celebrate. Sit with you when you're down. So, just like your company of best friends, this place can never let you down. No matter what your mood is, Amato Gelato has some of the best desserts to offer. Best place in city to try authentic Italian besserts from, gelato, to afogato (apologies for bad spelling for few of Italian words), cono, vin, mocha, espresso. Best part their amazing pet friendly patio. One of the best place to go and relax even during social distancing time.

Top Quality! Best ice-cream/gelato in town! They have done their research on quality ingredients and presentation. The place is really clean, modern but still very Italian/European look. The pistachio cheesecake was really amazing. The KIMBO coffee (more about personal taste) is more acidic and noticeably more bitter for my love of coffee, but ok (see comments below). I think we where served by the owners, they were very nice. I’ve been back several times with friends and family. Grazie per un'esperienza genuina!

Love how this location has so many different options and a wonderful space for customers to enjoy their treats without being rushed out like pretty much all the other ice cream shops! But Amato isn’t just an ice cream spot, first it’s got endless flavors of gelato so it trumps all others. But they also have cakes, hot coco floata, coffees, affogato. The spiked hot coco floats are really something else, just incredible! Excellent service too! Definitely a spot I’d go back to again and again!
