A review by a Deaf person with +1. This review is based individual with a story telling.
On our first full day finally settling in for a evening in Calgary, we decided to take a waltz in Carino for the first time. We entered as we wait for a table. We were captivated and mesmerized the each of the decors and the busyiness of the restaurant. The smell of the food brewing at the fine cuisine is a mystery to us. Many surprise yet to be unfold during that evening. The surprise was greeted by Kat who is currently learning American Sign Language from Calgary. Please note, ASL is not universal as it is a living language with differences from syntax, grammar, facial expression, and body languages from regional, local, national and globally influences from culture-context in terms of the language changes. It is also Deaf Awareness Month.
Anyways... Kat was thrilled to see just a brief second me and my partner sign. They asked if we signed, and we did in smoothly to serve our tables.
Ordered away our choices and recommend from Kat. Kat was also mindful to ask if any dietary needs or allergy attentions. We did mention being lactose intolerant.
For starters, we ordered sushi tacos assorted with a written piece of each tacos flavours and ingredients inside that is carefully arranged in placed.
For our meals of the evening, we ordered a special, Tonkatsu Curry and Spicy "Wagyu Bolognese" Miso Ramen. With a compliment of ordering two drinks being shared, Yoshinogawa Yuzu Sparkling (excuse me, if I don't really remember the name.)
I didn't eat too much of the portions on Spicy "Wagyu Bolognese" Miso Ramen. Unfortunately, will ask my partner in the comments if that is of interested. Though, he looks pleased and happy to eat it.
Tonkatsu curry was cooked in iron cast plating dish. It is extremely hot and bubbling in the surface. It was a great reminder to see Kat informed with caution. The curry is mild and not too spicy. The crispy parts of the tonkatsu was fresh and full pack on crunches. I enjoy that thoroughly which was one of Kat's recommends. Yum!
We will definitely recommend for sharing others to know and visit again. My hopes is that if the restaurant is most eager to learn and willing to continue to provide communication access to create deaf friendly experience. Perhaps, to be inviting and hiring in the scope of learning exchanges and participating the experience in learning what Carino restaurant can offer. And most of all, it is prepare and creating solution on ways to include all communities to invite regarding to accessibility being available.
With some ideas, can be potentially start with a vlog with sign language to invite Deaf people from locally in Calgary to get them to know you are serving the communities locally.
Otherwise, I am honored to be in part of the experience to meet Kat and see Carino for the week of Calgary's trip.
May we continue to celebrate, grow and learn about Deaf awareness month...

Our group of eight tried nearly everything on the menu, and we were blown away by the quality of each and every dish. The pastas and ramens were rich and flavorful, and the appetizers were inventive and unique. While the sushi tacos weren't our favorite, they still offered a tasty twist on traditional sushi.
One of the standout aspects of our dining experience at this Italian Japanese restaurant was the exceptional service provided by our waitress (red head with glasses). Despite being the only server on the floor, she remained calm and attentive throughout our entire meal, never missing a beat.
Not only did she take our orders and bring out our food and drinks promptly, but she also cleared away dishes and kept the table clean without any disruption to our conversation or enjoyment of the meal. It's clear that she takes pride in her work and cares about the satisfaction of her customers.
Her friendly and professional demeanor added to the overall positive experience, making us feel welcomed and valued as patrons of the restaurant. Even though the restaurant was bustling with activity, we never felt neglected or rushed. Her excellent service contributed to our overall enjoyment of the meal, and it's a testament to the quality of service you can expect at this establishment.
In a world where good service can be hard to come by, it's refreshing to see someone who is dedicated to providing a positive dining experience for their customers. Our waitress was a true asset to the restaurant, and we would not hesitate to return and enjoy her outstanding service again.
One thing to note is that while lunch service is first come, first serve, dinner requires a reservation. However, with such delicious food and impeccable service, it's definitely worth the extra effort to secure a spot.
Overall, this Italian Japanese restaurant is hands down one of the best restaurants in Calgary. Don't miss out on the chance to savor their unique and...
Read moreWe visited Carino many years ago when they first opened on Edmonton Trail across the street from Diner Deluxe. Our first visit was a random later in the night visit as it seemed interesting, and we were hungry.
From that experience, we would visit occasionally as their brunch fusion cuisine was fantastic. Over time, we drifted, and as the original restaurant closed, Carino escaped our minds.
Visiting again recently, we found the dining experience to be as exquisite and amazing as our memories served.
The chef does an amazing job pairing his Japanese heritage with his experience with Italian cuisine. Each dish we had had complimentary Italian and Japanese flavors and ingredients.
We had the Chicken Karaage, Ahi Tuna Carpaccio, Spicy Mussels Hot Pot with Frites, French Fries with Spicy Mayo, Bucatini with Wagyu Meat Sauce, and Spicy Linguine alla Vongole. We also got the Houjicha Creme Brulee with Seasonal Fruit and Dessert Tasting.
The pesto mayo was refreshing and paired deliciously with the crispy chicken nuggets.
The Spicy Mussels Hot Pot with Frites was the highlight of the night. The broth was so yummy. The only setback was the frozen coated Costco/Cavendish fries. Had they used handcut housemade fries, this would have been a perfect dish.
The pastas were excellent, though they carried mainly italian influences with little to no japanese infusion. We enjoyed both pastas.
The Dessert Tasting was excellent and the better of the 2 desserts that we had. Do not skip the dessert tasting, or you're missing out.
It's nice to see that Carino is still hitting it out of the park after all...
