The waitress that served us tonight should either be fired or quit. Donât know her name but she had shoulder-length straight brunette hair, skinny built, and a horrible personality. Never have I ever been mistreated before in a restaurant. Firstly, the restaurant was completely dead on a Saturday night when every other restaurant was fully booked on 4th and 17th. They werenât understaffed, and if the Earls across the street didnât have a long waitlist, we wouldnât have even stepped into this establishment. My friends and I instantly felt unwelcomed as soon as we walked in. Our waitress rolled her eyes at us as soon as we were seated. When we noticed that the restaurant was completely dead inside, we politely asked her if we could sit in the patio. Her response to us? âAre you serious? You guys didnât think to choose to sit in the patio BEFORE you came into the restaurant?â I was completely speechless. Who talks to guests like that? We were going to order food, but my friends and I were so scared that our waitress was going to spit in our food or poison us. Thatâs how terrible our experience was. The restaurant is dead, greasy, and they donât even wipe down their menus... now this waitress who clearly hates her job is giving us attitude about not wanting to sit inside. The patio (Which was also dead) was 3 steps away from our table. If thatâs a problem for our waitress, she needs to get a job elsewhere (preferably not in the service industry). Joyce on Fourth, if you really cared about your customer experience and safety, please have better COVID-19 protocols, train your staff better, and fire the waitress that serviced us. You will be doing your establishment a HUGE favour and Iâm sure it wouldnât bother her considering she hates her job. I sincerely hope you take my review seriously as no one should ever feel scared, unwelcomed, or discriminated in an...
Read moreWhile the food and drink variety is fantastic, prices are good, and awesome daily specials are to be had, Joyce continues to leave a bad taste in my mouth every time I figure I'll give them another shot.
The service is (and has been for as long as I can remember) excruciatingly slow. Whether in for weekend brunch with friends, or catching a post-work beverage, it's consistently sluggish. I don't mind waiting a few minutes for a drink, but when I was in yesterday it took 20 minutes to get my drink, and additional 20 for the person I was with to get hers (and it came out incorrectly, causing another substantial wait.)
You'd think after having this happen as many times as it has in the past, I'd learn my lesson and stop going back, but like a moth drawn to flame, I sometimes get a hankering for sitting in a public establishment at a table without a drink for long periods of time I suppose.
My advice to readers: If you're looking for a quick drink and a bite - this is not the place for you. If you're not super thirsty and looking to plummet into an existential crisis while waiting for the Second Coming; give it a whirl.
What I'd like to see from Joyce: Staff better for peak times and large events. I get that there was a playoff game last night, and while you had a ton of servers, I only saw one bartender. Perhaps staffing better when you know you're going to be busy would lead to less bottle-necking at the bar. Your staff seem legitimately stressed out and overwhelmed - how much training is given to them? Are they just thrown into the throbbing sea of hockey jerseys and expected to swim? Seems like it.
All in all, I'd be more sympathetic if yesterday was the first and only time I had awful service here, but the fact that it's a standard occurrence has led me to cross this one off my...
Read moreI have been to this place many times and never regret it. The atmosphere is really nice and it always feels cozy and welcoming.
They've got many more vegetarian options than most pubs do, including a good pasta and a power bowl.
The Gaslamp beers are on point, I wouldn't mind seeing them bottles and sold in retail environments. The beers are priced really well compared to a lot of pubs as well, including good schooner deals on most days. Not to mention they actually sell beers in 20oz pints too, which is sadly becoming a rare commodity lately.
The service is nearly always good, but Desiree is the best. She'll remember your last order even after one visit, and no matter how long you go between visiting the place she'll remember you. I've been to many, many pubs and restaurants and I can't remember the last time a server was this attentive and had a better memory.
The other servers are good too, they seem to rotate a little as all serving jobs go but I've never had a bad experience. Any time a beer or food takes a while to come to your table they're apologetic and give reasonable explanations without you needing to ask.
They have Trivia you can play on your phone through an app on the TV screens, TapTV Trivia which is a blast, and you'll nearly always see a couple of the same competitors, regulars who spend many an evening there, including "Notglob" who is usually the fiercest competition.
The live music nights and special events always bring the community together and there's much laughter and cheer.
Overall a great place - when I lived closer I was a regular, now I literally travel out of my way to go on occasion because there's just nothing like it in my...
