My family came here three times already; twice for lunch/merienda and once for supper. The staff are very friendly, helpful, and efficient. Although the kitchen is small, all the dishes came out quickly. The kitchen prides itself in making in-house sauces: lechon, bagoong (shrimp paste), sweet and sour(for the fish fillets). The pork skewers are amazing--juicy with housemade barbecue sauce (and no excess fat). Pinaputok(stuffed pomfret) was delicious as was the sweet and sour fish fillet. I (reluctantly at first) tried their Bicol Express(pork cooked in coconut milk, chili peppers and KDY shrimp paste) and discovered that I liked it (I haven't to this day acquired a taste for regular bagaoong(shrimp paste), but I like this version). The boys and I are huge fans of the garlic rice --there are generous portions of fried garlic without being overpowering. We haven't had a chance to try their desserts yet because we've been too full. Kain Der Yah also offers special dinners like boodle fights (regular and seafood) as well as selling chicken chicharron(crispy fried chicken skin) and special requests(e.g. party platters made in advance, of course). We will...
Read moreThe food is the best kind of homestyle cooking. I really enjoyed eating here for the first time. We ordered pancit bihon which was tasty except for the liver (I'll just get that left out next time); I was impressed with the house made chicharones! The pork adobo was wonderful with just the perfect balance of savoriness and vinegar. A side of garlic rice was perfect. We finished with singang con yelo: sliced bananas covered in shaved ice, then doused in a special milky syrup. Yum!
The lunch specials look like they are a great deal, I'll have to come back to try them.
The staff member at the front (the owner I think!) was super friendly as we decided what to eat. He even showed me pictures after I asked what singang con yelo was. Very helpful!
The restaurant is decorated simply with a lovely mix of the Philippines and Canada. One bathroom is large and easily accessible; the other one is stall-sized. Tables are spaced well apart and easily shifted to accommodate...
Read moreStarting with perfectly seasoned beef broth to whet the appetite, the succesion of traditional Filipino food we ordered, namely 'lumpiang sariwa', pork and chicken barbecues, pancit canton and 'sinangag' with lots of garlic, did not disappoint! The lumpia was well-appointed with the quintessential crushed fresh 'bawang' with the sweet and a little tangy sauce. The dash of turmeric in the noodle dish was a surprise. The fowl and porcine meats were succulent and nicely seasoned. Serving sizes were appropriate. Presentation was tops. Utensils and plates were spotlessly clean. The dining hall is well-designed, uncluttered, unmistakably Pinoy and unobstrusive. The volume-wise subdued lilt of pop and ballad tunes sung on the flatscreen by Pinoy talents is a welcome added dimension to our dining. For service, imagine how it feels to be doted. The tab at the end of a satisfying dining, was very reasonable. Well-done...
