We went to Lonely Mouth on December 19. They’ve been open for roughly two weeks we were told. Our experience to start was wonderful. We were seated immediately (had reservations) and a complimentary coat check service was provided. We were given warm hand towels as well. The server was kind and gave us several food recommendations when asked. We ordered the Tuna Tartar, two hand rolls, milk buns, Brussels sprouts Okonomoyaki, shrimp tempura and udon. The server mentioned she would bring us an extra bowl to share the udon and that the tempura would come out with it (so we know she was aware of our order). The first several dishes came out very quickly and each dish was explained to us.

We got most of our dishes within 20 mins of ordering. We still had not received the udon or tempura. We waited another 30 mins and our server finally came by and asked if we were doing okay and then took away our plate and chopsticks. We thought this was odd but maybe chalked it up to us getting new plates and utensils. We saw other tables who arrived after us receive tempura and udon. We asked our server to add an additional order to our tempura as we weren’t sure if they had truly forgotten. Our udon and tempura came out after another 15 mins. We are pretty certain our udon and tempura order was missed or forgotten and would not have been noticed had we not said anything. The tempura order came out first and we had to ask our server to bring us a new set of plates and chopsticks. The udon came out shortly after. Our server did not say anything and acted as if it was normal to wait over an hour for these dishes. This likely was a one off but given the atmosphere and prices we paid for the food, I’d expect an apology or acknowledgement that a mistake was made.

Overall the food was delicious. The food is on the pricier side. We would come back for the food but are hesitant due to the lack of acknowledgment of their error. We have this expectation given the prices we are paying.

Food recommendations: hand rolls, tuna tartar and the udon. The rest were good but nothing...

I don't really know how to rate this and usually refrain from giving bad reviews, but this experience was so odd and demeaning it needs to be noted. Landed in Calgary early afternoon, met up with friends and decided to head to the Lonely Mouth for good food. We were seated nicely and soon thereafter were brought water by a waitress. She then claimed to remember us and that she served us earlier (not possible, I just got into town and never have been there before, ever). Then there was a fairly long wait until Veronica showed up and took our order. After another long wait the assistant manager lady came over and informed us that the first waitress recognized us and that we did walk out on our bill earlier ...... What?? I just got into town that afternoon. To it I worked in service and bars for several years, I know how something like that hurts and have never done so EVER! And if that would have been true, why would we have come back....? Well after some negotiation, apparently the lady was not so sure herself, I was allowed to "pre-pay" our drinks and food. Veronica then served us well and nicely! Food was good! Then we ordered a 2nd drink and the manager lady came back to tell us that they cannot serve us any further drinks as we seem to be too drunk ..... What? Now drunk!? Not that I was never drunk, (I have experienced that well enough before) and I know how that feels, but I was not drunk that afternoon. No negotiating or pre-payment helped. And it was a coherent discussion from my side with the manager lady for a few minutes. But that must have been enough for one of the bar staff male employees to come out fairly aggressive in his approach (to someone friendly talking) and demanding us to leave! Which we did.

Never experienced something like that before! Maybe they should go back and check their camera feed before accusing people! And if someone is peaceful and friendly in discussion it might not be necessary to...

I had booked a last minute reservation here for dinner tonight for 7:45 to celebrate my birthday with my fiancé. We arrived at about 7:50PM. We were seated by the very friendly hostess right away. We had sat for about 20-25 minutes before our server had greeted us and gotten us waters. No issue though, he was very friendly and had walked us through the menus as it was our first time here. We have always passed by Lonely Mouth but had never made the time to try it out! We ordered tea and a cocktail. Few minutes later we got to make our order. This is where it was a bit a bad experience here for our first time. We had sat for another 30 minutes before our first hand roll had come out. By then we have almost been sitting here for an hour. 10 minutes later the next one but it was not what we had ordered. We waited until our server came back to confirm. He apologized on his behalf - again no issue with our server. He has been great. He quickly resolved it by getting the correct ones ordered and said he would take care of the incorrect ones.

Within the next 5 minutes or so the rest of our order comes through including our correct hand rolls. The food was okay. Rice felt undercooked. Again, it could be an off night. I have been in a service career for the last 12 years and I understand days like this are normal. Any criticism is good criticism though, right? It would have been a non tip night but I don’t want our server to be footing the incorrect order. No fault of his. He was great and had a positive vibe all night.

We would like to give this place another go in the...

I recently visited this charming establishment and was thoroughly impressed. The ambiance is truly exceptional—warm lighting and a welcoming atmosphere that made it an ideal spot for a relaxing meal. The photos I took here turned out beautifully, and I was completely satisfied with my experience. The service was equally noteworthy. The barista was friendly, attentive, and skilled, crafting drinks that were not only delicious but also showcased a true passion for his craft. His genuine and personable approach made us feel right at home. I must bring my ID with me to try some more drinks!! As for the food Curry Udon: It was well-executed, with a flavorful curry broth and tender noodles, though it didn’t stand out as particularly unique—it was a solid, traditional Japanese curry soup noodle dish, deserving of an 8/10. Beef Tartare: however, was outstanding. Served with a crispy tart shell, a delicate white sauce, and an avocado base, it was a well-balanced and innovative take on the classic dish. I would rate it a perfect 10/10. Snow Crab Hand Roll: was absolutely spectacular. With generous portions of sweet, fresh crab meat and a few pieces of creamy avocado, it was, without a doubt, the highlight of the meal. This dish easily earns a 10,000/10, and I highly recommend it to anyone visiting. In short, I regret not discovering this place sooner, and I will definitely be returning soon. A memorable dining experience overall!

Had a lovely time here at the new Lonely Mouth Bar. Beautiful decor, located right on 17ave, we were able to make a reservation ahead for 8 people for lunch on Sunday. Recommend reservations because they seem pretty busy, even on Sunday they were constantly buzzing with activity; almost a full house on the day we visited. Wait staff was friendly and helpful, so despite almost a full house, service was quick and everything went very well for us. Food was wonderful. They make their udon freshly in house regularly and that is certainly a must try. We ordered a assorted plate of their homemade tempura as well, which went along with the udons fantastically. We tried almost all of their meat plates, scallops, steak, miso cod and teriyaki chicken were all great. My 8 year old loved their miso cod, very smooth and tasty. Their teriyaki chicken was a nice surprise, as it was charcoal roasted and not the usual sauce filled type of teriyaki chicken; tasted wonderful and we'll balanced. My 8 year old son loved the sweet potato donuts for dessert (as did all of us). My wife also loved their toasted sesame gelato! They have a huge drink menu as well, and we tried the Lucky Cat cold sake, which was a light and refreshing cold sake. I also tried their Yuzu beer which was interesting as well!

We were really excited to try this place. From the reviews I already knew this wasn’t a traditional Japanese udon and hand roll bar, which is totally fine. We love udon and hand roll and appreciate food with a modern twist and creativity. Food - we ordered the kake and hiyashi udon. Both was mediocre and the udon was too al dente. They were probably trying to go for a chewy texture, but it was a touch too undercooked instead. We ordered 6 different hand rolls and they were all extremely underwhelming except the shrimp. We were still hungry but did not want to order any more food to try based on these dishes. Service - the hostesses were the only friendly people here. Our server came off as rather rude and unfriendly, which is unfortunate because no degree of fantastic food is enough to make me revisit a restaurant with subpar service. Not to mention, the food was not fantastic. A short while after we sat down, our table (which is in a corner) reeked of marijuana smell. After that finally dissipated, it smelled like cigarette smoke. We were seated close to the hallway to the kitchen/bathroom. Not sure where the smell is coming from but it got trapped in our corner and was extremely unpleasant.
