I've been coming to Newcastle for years, would give 6 stars if I could. I am not a beer drinker, so I can't comment on the current beer selection, although I would like to see some more ciders on the list. What the menu does not lack is good food. From pub classics to actual good restaurant food, Newcastle has it all. You want fish and chips? you get fish and chips, no gimmicks, just a plate of good quality and great tasting food. The burgers at Newcastle are among the best I've had, the patties taste great and they don't put any unneeded gimmicky sauces or toppings on the burger, this makes it a real pleasure to eat both for flavour and for not having a soggy mess of aioli and onion rings instead of an actual sandwich. The management frequently makes small changes and additions to the menu, which is nice but can be a potential drawback when favourites are removed (Chicken Pot Pie, happy hour pretzels). Some of these new menu items diverge from traditional pub fare and are executed to the same high quality as the pub standards. The green beans in black bean sauce and the Ahi Tuna Buddha Bowl are wonderful examples of this - it's evidential that somebody in the kitchen has a real passion for good food and isn't married to the deep-frier as other pub cooks seem to be. Kudos to the cooks for providing amazing consistency over the years I have been coming here, achieving this high level of consistency is a difficult thing to do in a modern restaurant with a large menu. In terms of ambiance, it's fine, much like the food you get what you pay for, there isn't a waterfall in the middle of the room, it's a straight laced, well-maintained pub and that's what I like about it. Service has always been good and the manager is a really nice guy to chat with but also knows how to keep his patrons in line, which can generate some bad reviews but some people just don't know how to act. The manager's attention to his patrons is relfected in the pub's excellent athmosphere. The food I have gotten from them over skip is also great, the quality holds up even through a delivery, although I do wish they used less packaging for the sake of the earth and so I don't feel bad about myself eating 3 boxes of food. TLDR: great food, good value, never had a bad experience, everything you would expect from a neighbourhood pub and more. I recommend the Newcastle Club, any of their burgers, or the...
Read moreBeen here several times with my Navy friends for drinks and dinner over the past few years and they have been decent.
Decided to bring my friend to try out their lunch specials ($14.50) for the first time. Upon entering we were greeted by the staff, seated, and quickly took our drink orders. We subsequently ordered the lunch special as well. 3 options and all comes with a choice of side (Salad, Soup, or Fries). Salad options were caesar or house. My friend ordered the Caesar and I got the house salad. When my lunch arrived, my house salad was plain - literally WITHOUT ANY salad dressing. With the common assumption they probably just made a mistake by not adding any dressing, I was given about 10 different choices to choose from. It arrived a short while later in a separate container so I can finally enjoy my house salad. No she did not ask what dressing I would like with my house salad when I ordered it. Steak sandwich was ok - definitely not a great quality steak; which I guess was reflected in the price.
Issue arrived with the bill; we were not informed at all about any upcharges but there were: A $3.50 upcharge for the caesar salad. I understand some establishment treat caesar as an upgrade - but we were NOT informed at all about the charge. A charge for salad dressing for my house salad. Never in my life was I charged for salad dressing. If I asked for 'extra' dressing that is fine, but in this case it wasn't. It was the principal of it all. I was puzzled and asked and was met with a 'yup' reply. No thank you by the server either at the end after leaving a 15% tip.
Now I wonder if we order fries, will we be charged for ketchup? I guess I'm glad we didn't get charged for using their cutleries or extra napkins.
Not sure if I would return - will be sharing this experience with our Navy and...
Read moreUnfortunately I have to give this place a 1 star minimum. It doesn't even deserve that. Kitchen could not cook my fries with out burning them. Had to ask for them to cook new fries then when u got my meal a second time half the amount of fries hut still some burnt. Waitress took away cutlery and forgot to bring new ones back had to ask for cutlery to eat. Had to ask for water to drink. Asked for mayo twice never got it once the whole time during our meal. I even told the waitress it was my first time there hoping that the she would care but nope. Really tried to enjoy my time there but they continued to drop the ball. I had enough asked. We asked for the bill to leave and of course they charged full pop for everything on the bill. My guest went to speak to the manager and they took off my meal but he said, HE DIDNT WANT ME TO COME BACK IT I WAS BEING RUDE TO HIS SERVER! Unfortunately my guest didn't tell me this till after we left.
Fyi, NO ONE WAS RUDE TO ANYONE. I NEVER SWORE OR RAISED MY VOICE I STATED I WAS TIRED OF THE SUB PAR SERVICE AND SUB PAR FOOD POINT BLANK.
DON'T WORRY I WOULD NEVER EVER WASTE MY HARD EARNED MONEY AT AN ESTABLISHMENT LIKE THIS . LOTS OF OTHER PLACES IN CALGARY TO GO FOR BAD FOOD AND BAD SERVICE.
FYI MY BILL WAS $113 FOR 2 PEOPLE THANKS FOR THE $16 OFF THE BILL. IF I KNEW THE MANAGER JIM SAID FOR ABOUT ME NOT TO COME BACK BEHIND MY BACK THEN I WOULD HAVE CONFRONTED HIM MAN TO MAN. CLEARLY HE IS NOT A MAN. AND HE COULD HAVE KEPT HIS 16 DOLLARS.
THIS PLACE IS AS GOOD AS THEY BELIEVE IN THEIR OWN MINDS LOL. NO ONE ELSE. CLEARLY THE PROBLEM STARTS FROM THE TOP WITH THIS PLACE AND I SEE IT . POOR ATTITUDE POOR SERVICE POOR FOOD POOR MANAGEMENT.
DON'T GO HERE SAVE YOUR MONEY. WOULD RATHER GO TO MC. DONALDS. THEY HAVE BETTER FOOD BETTER SERVICE AND...
