Sierra Cafe Inc. — Restaurant in Calgary

Normally I wouldn’t take the time to submit a negative review, but this time I am willing to make an exception.. This had to have been one of the most upsetting and triggering experiences for my in law who visited this establishment.. I hate to think that this was discriminatory and racially motivated but this is certainly what it felt like. My MIL was in the area when she decided to check out this corner cafe. Upon arriving, prior to placing an order the young lady who was behind the counter had approached her and had the audacity to comment “We might be too expensive for you..” What I want to understand is what was her intentions when she had said that? And what gives ANYONE the right to assume and say something like that and possibly think that it’s ok? You would think that in todays day and age we wouldn’t still be having these types of conversations. But here we are.. and it’s disgusting! I am in no position to victimize my MIL because this wouldn’t be the first time she’s encountered discrimination based on appearance and race. As resilient as she is, in the end she always puts her best foot forward and chooses to take the high road especially in these particular circumstances. I for one will not be silent and bear witness to discrimination when it’s happening right in front of me. Needless to say this was beyond unacceptable for your employer and for the rest of the staff who didn’t speak up. My good friend lives in the area so we agreed to meet up there for a visit. Now, I was coming from eating a rather unsatisfying meal so I was kinda full. I wasn't going to get anything but I was thirsty. So I asked the young guy behind the counter what he would suggest. He gave lots of good suggestions. He was very patient with me as I decided on the Chai Latte. I had never ordered this before and I was very satisfied with my choice. It was very thirst quenching! A delightful cold drink. I will definitely order it again. When my friend arrived, she decided on a sandwich. When it arrived, we both commented on how great it looked. It looked so fresh and appetizing. Well, she said it was a delish as it looked. And, man, did it look tasty! While we continued with our visit, the young man came out and chatted with us as he cleared out table. My girlfriend had her very awesome Labradoodle with her. The guy asked if he could bring out some treats for her. Needless to say, he found a permanent and lifelong friend. It was so kind of him. He also said he was going to put the water bowl out. It was so relaxing to sit in the sun in April visiting with my friend and her dog. I would give Sierra Cafe an extra star for being pet friendly if I could. I met several nice dogs that day. Next time, I will bring my Stella. I’ve been visiting Sierra Cafe since they first opened in 2020, and at this point, I’m convinced I wouldn’t have a degree without this place! I’ve spent countless hours here (first cranking out papers, and nowadays occasionally working remotely) and it has truly become my “third place.”

The staff makes you feel like family, the food is always fresh and comforting (lots of gluten-free options too!), and they serve hands-down the best coffee and matcha in the city (the maple cold brew has my ❤️- I wish it was a permanent menu item!).

Sierra Cafe is a hidden gem, and even though I no longer live or study nearby, I’ll still make the trek because there’s simply no other place in the city like it.
