Disappointing First (and Last) Visit to The 1947 indian restaurant
I went to the 1947 indian restaurant in lacombe expecting an authentic Indian dining experience, but it turned out to be a complete letdown. From the moment we sat down, the service was nonexistent. Our server completely forgot our order, and we had to chase him down just to get it placed. Even after the food arrived, he never once checked in to see how it was or if we need anything—leaving us feeling invisible.
The food itself was equally underwhelming, especially for the price. I ordered the Subz Begam Bahar (which is essentially a mixed vegetable curry) and Kadhai Paneer. The "mixed vegetables" were straight out of a frozen bag—overprocessed, mushy, and lacking any freshness. If I'm paying premium prices for this level of quality, it's baffling. And don't get me started on the green chutney: it was watery and diluted, like they'd added extra water just to stretch it out. When I politely asked why, the server shrugged and said, "White people like it this way." Excuse me? I'm not sure which "white person" gave him that tip, but it stripped away any authenticity from what should be a vibrant, fresh sauce. Total cop-out.
The cherry on top? When I pointed out the poor service, he admitted they were short-staffed— If that's the case, why open at all? There were only 2 other customers at that time that already had eaten their meals already and were ready to go. It felt unprofessional and frustrating, especially for a first-time visit.
Save your money and time—there are better Indian spots out there that actually deliver on flavor, freshness, and hospitality. This was my one and...
Read moreThis new upscale Indian restaurant is an unexpected treasure in Lacombe! It has an extensive menu, authentic Indian dishes and well-trained wait staff. Reservations are recommended, as this place is busy! We decided to have dinner here because of the wonderful reviews online. The restaurant was very comfortable - clean, well lit, there are beautiful prints from India on the walls and soft background music was playing. There were 4 in our party, and we each ordered apps, sides and entrees. Our bill was around $30 per person, typical for a high quality restaurant like this. The food was absolutely amazing, with layers of flavors like I experienced while traveling in India. You could taste the fresh tomatoes used for the sauces, and we were not surprised to be told that everything was made from scratch. The sizes of our entrees were generous, and we each ordered the level of spiciness to suit our tastes. We decided to share our entrees of tender Lamb Vindaloo, delicious butter chicken, a lightly spiced Chicken Korma and a lovely Vegetable Curry. The chef here is truly inspired, and clearly he has a wide range of skills for creating these amazing dishes. We had a wonderful meal, and are really looking forward to returning soon so we can work our way through this...
Read moreWent for supper with my parents, and the food was REALLY GOOD. I had the Biryani with chicken and a mango lassi. Tried some of the food my parents ordered as well and the chicken vindaloo was to die for, so good! Also sampled the butter chicken and a curry that I forget the name of with paneer and a dairy/tomato sauce, and both were excellent. There were options for mild, medium or spicy, some of us ordered medium and others ordered spicy. Spicy was hot but not overwhelming and still flavourful. (For reference, I have a relatively high spice tolerance for a white person, and like spicy food.)
You do need to purchase rice separately for the curries, but the curries come in large portions, so we had leftovers.
Tables are set are very close together which may pose challenges for accessibility and getting into your seat if you're not facing out into the aisles. It can also get quite loud, due to high ceilings and how many tables there are in a small space. The space is clean and well-lit, and I was glad there was nothing visual playing on the TV, just chill music.
Staff are super friendly and we were able to pass our compliments on to the...
