Rotting fish. That's right. This place charged us $100 to eat old rotting fish.
Let me start at the beginning. I first came to Sushi Mori with my wife when we were dating several years ago. It was on a weekend at the lunch hour and there was a list of people on the waitlist going out the door. Food was great and we decided to come back in the future.
Flash forward to just an hour ago, and the place was deserted. A large cavernous restaurant with only about 5 tables seated on a Saturday afternoon with great weather. That should have been a huge red flag that something had changed at this restaurant.
We ordered the tempura set and it was good. The fried prawn and yam were hot and crispy. Then we had what the server recommended - the Crazy Cowgirl Roll. It was unexpectedly deep fried, and I consider deep fried sushi an abomination. However, I was super hungry after completing an emergency service call so I ate it without much complaint.
Then the main entree arrived. A $42 sashimi set with 14 pieces. This is where I realized that I had entered the third circle of hell. First of all, the "set" came on small bread plate. The 14 pieces were so small and thinly cut that they could literally fit on a slice of white toast.
Just the sight of it made me laugh a little. I could not believe anyone in Vancouver had the nerve to serve so little for so much outside of a Michelin Guide rated restaurant.
Then it got worse, I put the fish into my mouth and began tasting the old rotting seafood. The ebi was old and slimy. The fish slices were cut incorrectly and in different shapes and sizes. Worst of all, some of the fish was so old that the flesh was breaking apart just with a touch.
I immediately spat out the fish and stopped eating the rest of the food we ordered. No matter how hungry I was, I could not eat anymore of this so called "food".
When the $100 bill came, I still properly tipped the server. It was not his fault the food was inedible. My wife was so aghast at the quality of the food that she told him about how bad the food was. I told the server that I would not eat here again.
The food was so bad that I had to write this review less than an hour I ate there. My stomach is roiling and my developing headache foretells that I will soon be entering the fourth or even the fifth circle of hell. An imminent appointment with my toilet awaits.
My final thought is just to stay away. As a small business owner, I know the impact of bad reviews but you cannot serve people this kind of "food" and charge them...

I am 100% positive the time prior was just an off night and is not a regular occurrence. Staff were attentive and the food was amazing. Complacency is a part of life and sometimes others have to remind us when we get stuck in it.
Prior visit: I am really shocked at the service here. We entered and were not acknowledged. We stood there for some time to even be seated. Funny because when you walk in they have a door bell chime alerting staff that someone has entered but I feel they ignore it. It wasn’t busy. There were perhaps two or three tables at the time. I noticed a couple stood at the front for 4-5 mins waiting to be seated. We figured out what we wanted to eat but no one came to take our order. We sat and sat and sat confused as to why no one was coming. We flagged down staff-she came, said sorry and finally took our order. Food arrived, we ordered 81 dollars worth of sushi, sashimi and chicken. It was all really good which is the sad part. Foods tasty- the service was shockingly poor. The gentleman who gave us our food was perhaps the owner. Very kind and funny but then no one came around our area after that. So we ate and We wanted to pay and leave but there was NO ONE around. So again we sat and sat and sat and sat trying to flag someone down or make eye contact with staff- NOTHING. I had to get up and flag down a bus boy that was cleaning a table in the booth behind me. I asked for my bill and a box. The bill and box came and it was the first time in my life I left zero tip. Your food at sushi mori is super fabulous. I always door dash Japanese food from sushi mori- this time we chose dining in for date night instead. I noticed 2 parties come in to pick up their take out orders. I’ll stick to that rather than dining in. I hope the service can be improved on, I’m sure it...
Read moreIf I had a choice of giving them 0 stars I would. They have very poor quality food, they have terrible service and customer service. We got seated at the booth without a menu, after 10 minutes someone came to take our order! We asked for a menu and he said" oh right". We ordered Miso and a Yam Tempura roll. Miso was ok, but the roll was old, yam was cold and mushy, the batter was soggy and mushy. We didn't even eat, asked for a fresh batch as this one was clearly old. Server came back after 3 minutes with the exact same plate and roll that was steaming! They microwaved the same roll and sent it back, in the same mushy soggy state, which again we did not even eat one roll piece of it. So we said forget it, we were upset by their service and asked for the bill. I noticed on the bill they charged us for the roll plus a 0.50¢ discount!!!! When confronted, the server did not acknowledge the bad service or say sorry, she made excuses and said well we made you a fresh roll! When we told her a microwaved roll is not fresh made she got all upset and said" well it's not my job now, so don't insult me" and yanked the bill and went back to the register, we could hear her voice and the Chef's across the restaurant discussing us. Then a new server came with a new bill, they finally took the roll out and charged us for the 2 miso soup we had. She tried to make it sound like we were trying to get out of paying our bill, because they offered us a fresh made roll but we declined! We told her after 2 attempts and their unprofessional attitude and service, of course we'd decline. And we will NEVER go back there again. Interior might be nice, but i care about quality of my food and the service I'm receiving than a bunch of fake Sakura trees. This was my second bad experience at this restaurant, will not recommend...
