Bay Leaf Indian Fusion-Cranbrook — Restaurant in Cranbrook

My husband, two kids and I were visiting nearby in Kimberley for a mini-vacation last week and stopped for lunch here after reading the positive reviews. The restaurant is very simple in decor, but the service was warm and the food was delicious. We enjoyed all of our food including the papadums (my 6-year old gave them an A+ rating), the butter chicken, the cauli aloo, the okra masala, and the garlic naan (so light and fluffy). We have eaten as several Indian restaurants in different cities and the Bay Leaf restaurant is now one of our top 2 favourites! The price was very reasonable for the portions we received. Dilip (sp?), the owner and chef, came out to greet us and answer questions we had about the menu. Incidentally, my daughter had recently read a book about Nepal so she was pleased to find out that Dilip and his wife (our server) are from there :) If you are passing through Cranbrook, do stop by and support this wonderful family-run restaurant. We liked the food so much that we tried to eat there again for lunch the next day but it was closed as we didn't check the hours beforehand, haha. My wife and I have been eating her since it’s opened in Cranbrook. We have always gotten the same dishes every time we go in. We order take out at least once month And have always loved the food, it’s our comfort food whenever we’d have a bad day out first thought was always , “let’s get bayleaf”

Leading up to today We decided we should get bayleaf. The food has changed drastically since the last time we ordered, and some items are no longer on the menu - we were informed when we picked up our food they have changed the menu/recipes. I got The lamb lababdar was covered in a thick oil and chunky. (see photo) my wife got the butter chicken was severely disappointed with the flavour and consistency. She compared it to being lesser quality than spice hut, and it only had 5 small chunks of chicken - this was once her favourite butter chicken of all time.

This was unfortunately a terrible experience from a business we once loved, very sad to see the classic menu items we love be changed...

The other reviews do not lead you astray Do you want something so truley insane and full of flavour?. I think i know what its like to be a dependant or addict after this experience. If this place was in victoria bc i would be ther 2x a month. I had 2 dishes with the delicious cilantro naan bread. The lamb laabdra will change your life. Ia.a better person for trying it. It makes me want to do better. So i can have the opportunity to eat it again.

Whats wrong with this place. Well a few more wine sellctins s at a higher dollar and a 9 oz glass. MKes it just 11/10 Such great staff. Such incredible food. Is it in a conference room of a hotel. Yep it is. Should that matter? Nope.. Truley just unbelievable and delicious I take pride in my cooking. My attempt at curry after eating here makes it clear i havr a world of learning to even co.e close
