I have been here twice, once for breakfast and more recently for dinner. Breakfast was ok. The platter I had consisted of ham, sausage, eggs, toast and homefries. The portions were generous and that seems to be a common thing with Sam's; you get a lot of food. I found the ham really salty and the breakfast sausage was just like every other sausage I have encountered at a diner. I was part of a 6 person group and the wait staff were friendly and competent. I wasn't disappointed but it wouldn't be a place I would travel to. That just might be my Halifax bias. I do love Dartmouth tho.
Dinner was a better experience. I am not a huge seafood fan but this is where Sam's has an edge. If you want unfancy seafood and fries and lots of it this is the place.
I was part of a group of five. The waitress was great in looking after us. Most ordered fish and chips. I had breaded calamari with fries. One other ordered paddock tips.
They have two types of fries available as well as other starch options. Standard fries are frozen and just ok. The fresh house cut fries were quite good and what I had. They are worth getting. I don't remember if they cost a bit more. Regardless if they are available I recommend them.
The verdict was every body liked what they ordered and nobody was able to finish their meal. As a fat guy I can't recall the last time I tapped out on a plate. I didn't think the calamari would travel or reheat well so no doggie bag was requested. Some of the party got them.
The calamari were heavily breaded and a bit bland but well done, pleasant and not rubberized. With the nice fries and condiments and a couple of beers I considered it a decently priced good meal. I would probably go for the fish next time.
They have a fair amount of parking. The decor is simple dark brick. They do take out and...
Read moreUpdated review April 1, 2021...So....I've been here many times over the years. Food is always pretty good, if a little greasy. Service is usually pretty good. But...today...! The server was very nice, brought us out decent food, no complaints. However, half way through the meal, it sounded like a very irate customer had come through the doors and started screaming obscenities at the top of his lungs. We didn't know whether to run or stick around, but it was mid-afternoon and there was only one other couple dining, so we stayed in our seat. Upon closer listen it was the OWNER yelling about having to do dishes for seven hours when he owned the place and complaining about how he was treated (not sure if he meant by staff or customers). He dropped a minimum of a dozen very loud "f-bombs" during this tirade. I was mortified and when the server came by our table I asked her if everything was okay back there. She says "oh it's just Sam having a tantrum". As if it's a normal thing to subject employees and customers to such actions. Never again will I go back through those doors and when I was relaying this story to a couple people afterwards, they were not surprised, saying they had heard terrible things about the owner and his treatment of staff for many years. I am sorry I ever gave them any business. This behaviour would qualify as verbal and emotional abuse in any home or business, I cannot believe he gets away...
Read moreSam's Seafood in Westphal is an absolute gem that deserves every bit of its five-star rating. From the moment you step in, you're greeted with a warm atmosphere and friendly service that sets the tone for a memorable dining experience.
Now, let's talk about their clams. Oh, where do I even begin? These clams are a true testament to perfection. Each bite is bursting with flavor, leaving you craving more with every mouthfull. Sam's knows how to do clams right. Their secret seasoning adds just the right amount of zest, making every bite an explosion of taste that lingers on your palate long after you've finished.
However, I must admit that while the clams are undoubtedly the star of the show, the same cannot be said for the fries. While they're decent enough, they lack the same wow factor as the clams. They could use a bit more seasoning or perhaps a different cooking technique to elevate them to the same level of excellence found in the rest of the menu.
Nevertheless, don't let the fries deter you from visiting Sam's. With their impeccable seafood selection, inviting ambiance, and top-notch service, this place is a must-visit for any seafood enthusiast. So, if you find yourself in Westphal craving some delicious clams, look no further than Sam's. You won't be...
