Being lazy like I am, I like to not pack a lunch. So I eat out pretty often for lunch. Since I was recently diagnosed as diabetic, I have become a lot more cagey on what food makes it to my stomach. I work nearby The Chopped Leaf so, as I was getting tired of my existing options, I decided it was time for something new. They don't specifically cater to diabetic people, but I had a look at their nutrition guide. This one listed sugars and carbs. A pleasant surprise. I was able to pre-pick out what I was going to have.
Cut to walking into the restaurant, I was greeted by a friendly looking guy behind the counter who was able to guide me through the ordering process. I ended up with what amounted to a bucket of salad and a really big soup. Be warned, dear reader when they say large, they mean large. The soup was some kind of Thai concoction with a pleasant curry flavour. It was smooth and hot. It even came with croutons, but I'm not supposed to eat those because flour is carb, carb is sugar. I ate them anyway.
The salad thing was quite nice and flavourful in spite of the low carb count on the menu. There was lettuce, tomatoes, boiled egg, bacon bits and avocado all in some sort of light white sauce. I couldn't finish it. I did find a chunk of paper in the salad, but I caught it before it got to my mouth. I'm sure it was just wrapping from one of the ingredients. No harm done.
All in all, this was an expensive meal. Note to self, don't get soup and salad. Or at least the large soup with salad - this isn't Press'd. Deducted a star for the price - not a reflection on the restaurant. The food is quite good. I will...
Read moreMy husband picked up a salad for me. To my huge disappointment they have changed their salad ingredients? What used to be the Bangkok salad is now mostly lettuce. He paid $13 for lettuce, a tablespoon each of peanuts, chopped bell pepper, noodles and a tablespoon of edamame beans. Paid extra for having the evil peanut sauce on the side. Paid an Additional five dollars for seven shrimp. The total for the salad was $18. This is insane. There was no brown rice like there used to be, no broccoli, no mushrooms. I fed it to my chickens. I was so upset. I won’t be back. It used to be my favourite place to go for supper or lunch. Then when I phoned to ask about whether they had changed the ingredients, I got somebody that couldnt understand English. They finally put somebody else on who also didn’t speak English very well so they didn’t understand what I was trying to say. They kept asking if I wanted to put an order in. All I wanted to do was clarify if the ingredients changed in the salads. I wish I would have thought to take a photo of the so called salad. Oh well....
Read moreI’ve been a regular Chopped Leaf customer for years and have always appreciated their fresh, healthy options. Unfortunately, my recent experience at this location was frustrating enough that I won’t be returning.
I ordered the Bangkok Bowl, but when my order came out, it was a wrap. I let the staff know there must have been a mistake, and instead of handling it calmly, the person at the till rudely insisted—three times—that “you ordered a wrap.” I’m certain I didn’t: I avoid bread, and I definitely wouldn’t choose a noodle-based dish like the Bangkok Bowl in wrap form.
After an uncomfortable and tense exchange, they agreed to remake it as a bowl (after I paid an extra $3). What I received wasn’t very fresh, was overloaded with sauce, and mostly made up of dry rice. I ended up throwing half of it away.
Back at the office, I shared what happened, and a few coworkers mentioned they’ve also had disappointing experiences at this location recently. It’s unfortunate to see the service and food quality decline at a place I used...
