I visited Denny’s Restaurant in Fort St. John last week while passing through town, and I had a mixed experience. I’d give it a 3.5 out of 5 stars—it’s a decent spot for a quick meal, but there are some inconsistencies to be aware of.
Denny’s is located at 8322 86 St, right off the Alaska Highway, which makes it a convenient stop if you’re traveling or just looking for a casual meal in Fort St. John. The restaurant has that classic diner vibe with a casual, family-friendly atmosphere. It’s open from 6 AM to 11 PM, and I believe some locations are 24/7, though this one wasn’t. The interior was clean, and the staff were generally friendly, which I appreciated.
I ordered the Build Your Own Grand Slam for breakfast, which is one of their signature dishes. I chose pancakes, scrambled eggs, bacon, and hashbrowns for $12.99, and I added a coffee for $3. The pancakes were fluffy and delicious, and the bacon was crispy, just how I like it. The hashbrowns were a bit undercooked for my taste, though—they were more soft than crispy. The coffee was standard diner coffee, nothing special but decent enough to get me going. They also have a variety of other menu items like burgers, skillets, and milkshakes, which I might try next time.
The service was a bit of a mixed bag. My server was polite and checked on me a couple of times, but the food took longer than expected—about 30 minutes, even though the restaurant wasn’t very busy (there were only a few other tables). I’ve read online that some people have had similar experiences with slow service here, and one review even mentioned undercooked sausages and mixed-up orders, though thankfully I didn’t have those issues. On the positive side, another reviewer on Tripadvisor mentioned that the staff were accommodating to picky eaters, which I can see being a plus for families.
One thing I noticed is that they seem to prioritize delivery orders (they’re on SkipTheDishes and DoorDash) over dine-in customers at times. I saw a few staff members busy packing takeout orders while I was waiting for my food, which might explain the delay. Also, the prices are a bit higher than I’d expect for a diner—my meal with coffee came to about $18 after tax, which felt a little steep for the portion size.
Overall, Denny’s in Fort St. John is a decent option if you’re craving classic diner food like pancakes or a hearty breakfast. The food quality is generally good, but the slow service and slightly high prices bring it down a notch. I’d probably stop by again if I’m in the area, but I’d hope for a quicker...
Read moreI am older person and social interaction was always taught as a child. Be nice, polite, and it should be both ways. Something that is not always found in the services industry anymore. However a delightful surprise is Denny's here in Fort St John. A delightful place to go, socialize, and of course eat. Our server was one of the most caring and gracious people I've met in my travels across four provinces. It was a great joy to be encouraged to talk to all that worked to create our meal and to the manager. I did meet with the manager and again friendly and the kindest of men. The two people who created/cooked up our lunch very friendly and polite. Lots of smiles in Denny's here is Fort St John. The gravy we had today was unique to say the least. Almost an onion gravy ish, with salt and pepper. I didn't need to add either and to me it wasn't too much of anything simply a good fantastic mix of all three. My meal was simple and I was surprised to find I ate it all. Normally I'm not that enticed to eat restaurant food. Not greasy, not overcooked, not undercook the food was simply fantastic.
I would encourage everyone and anyone who goes to Denny's here in Fort St John to ask for Susie the server. She is fantastic and then please tell Freddie how wonderful she is. There are so many complaints out there today.... that good comments alwasy light a heart. Be nice and enjoy. I will eat here again, quite happily by the way.
Our meal is not listed below... it was great anyway... My daughter's sandwich she could not finish... we took half on our way out.
I'm not sure about the lighting when the night comes. However, I am willing to return and find out for myself... Hopefully I can updeate this...
Read moreWhere do I even start? Party of 3. When we arrived, the restaurant was less than half full. We waited an hour and 15 minutes for BREAKFAST. Completely unacceptable. Service was good but after a point they kept checking on us, and for what? We didn’t have any food! The people in the booth beside us even inquired at one point as to how much longer they would have to wait. Then when we finally get our food, the bill was given to us not long after. My daughter was still eating and the waitress asked if I needed the debit machine. So you make me wait over an hour for my food then when I’m eating, try to rush me through and out the door? Ugh. Bathroom was freezing cold, but clean. Restaurants was clean as well. The waitress had said near the end that one of the cooks had walked out earlier and normally I’d let the long wait slide because of that, but I can see from other reviews that wait times are a regular problem at this restaurant so it clearly wasn’t a fluke.
As for the food, I haven’t been to Denny’s in over a decade so I wasn’t sure what to expect. Pancakes taste like they’re made with cake mix. Bacon is thin and so incredibly salty, and the hash browns leave something to be desired. And can we talk about how they don’t even serve real maple syrup?! In Canada!!! The portions are very large too but literally every breakfast order is like that. So I ended up wasting a lot of food (not bringing home breakfast food. It gets soggy) I would have preferred to just be able to order a smaller dish.
100% will not be back to this location. Or any Denny’s for...
