I think the change from Chez Barbe to the new ownership will be a good thing. There is already plenty of poutine shacks around the area and this is something new and different. They are still in the transitioning phase, but the food, website etc is already better than first time I ordered. Have never had middle eastern food like that in Canada and very much enjoyed — felt like a 4 star restaurant meal, while still prepared fast AND priced lower than the high end competition on rue portage or even the other fast food near eddy, somehow. Being in a low end neighborhood, the prices bring good value and appeal. And while the ethnic/cultural demographics of the area may limit those trying something outside of their paradigm, I have no doubt that it could be a big hit if they are able to get ppl to give it a shot. I.e. their challenge will be to get ppl to actually try it, but am sure they’ll be sold/hooked once they do!
The resto itself has lots of potential too. Quaint but sizeable dining floor. With a little bit of remodelling — with or without renovations — it could attract more guests in no time. There are no other establishments with the same floor space between Portage and St Joseph after all. I highly suggest opening the windows, hiring a painter, and adding a colourful banner outside to get the attention of passers by. Given the demographics, mail, street and word of mouth is likely the best approach; although, facebook may also be an easy and affordable place to advertise in the early days. Consider approaching PdC, Saveurs Urbaines, Proxim, etc., for a brief advertisement opportunity. E.G. a brochure packet.
Finally, the two ladies there are very kind, humble, and hard working. I rarely offer marketing advice for free, but they deserve it!
PS Happy to share other ideas for mutual benefit, if interested. Répondez ici si oui et je vous écrit si/quand je peux! Merci et bon courage...
Read moreMy apologies i can give only 5 stars , they deserve 10 for their enthusiasm , the quality of dishes and their customer service . Its a small shop with a big heart . I run foodie meetups in ottawa and Indonesian food has been on my radar for quite some time , I chanced upon Djakarta taste when i was hyped by an article on times on the rise of indonesian food and was frantically searching for the same in the locality . I gave them a call and the reception was excellent . We did setup a saturday for a small group of Picky foodies to try the food and we are sooooo glad we did
I will quickly dive into a Pros and Cons list
Pros The Traditional dishes - Try to get them just the way they are , read up about the ingredients and try them in authentic form , they ace it, like nasi padang, mi goreng , bakwan . The staff : Warm , welcoming , homely. They go 100% to make you feel at home The variety of savory : The spread is amazing .
Can be improved Space if you plan to dine in : Small shop , they will do their best , however cut them some slack considering its run from a home Turnaround time : some dishes like shrimp takes time , the chef is super fast but it is one person , so be aware of the turnaround when you place a large order Parking space behind is limited , so plan accordingly
Once again they are suited now for a takeaways and they will entertain dine in for small groups . But the fooood is just amazing . try it . Indonesian at its best

Read moreI am part Indonesian and grew up eating a few Indonesian dishes. I was excited to try this place but disappointed with the food. First, the amount of meat in each dish was very small. Second the laksa and bamie had no taste. The laksa was especially plain, as if no salt was added. I could barely taste any coconut. Finally, the restaurant was not as in the picture. It was basically in a basement area under a Mexican restaurant and it was freezing. We took our food to go because it was clear that the heat wasn’t on and it was 43 degrees. The dining area in the pictures looks very nice but it wasn’t that way in person—did they move to a cheaper space?? The chicken satay was the only thing I can recommend. The appetizers (martabak, etc) were very greasy as if the oil wasn’t hot enough.
Editing to add: that same night I got very sick from their food. It all came...
