Firstly, I want to apologize to Tim, the bartender of Chuck's Roadhouse Bar & Grill, for the rude comments I made when I left the restaurant. With that said, I'm sure some people can relate when someone threatens to poison your family; you may not take it lightly. On January 5th, 2024, my family and I attended Chuck's Roadhouse Bar & Grill for the first time around 6:30 pm. I arrived 15 minutes after my family, I found them and sat at the table. I asked my family where the washrooms were located; my mother informed me not to ask the bartender, Tim, as they'd already had a negative interaction with him before I arrived; this interaction was why they felt the need to move from the bar seating to a table next to the bar. I located the washrooms and returned.
The five of us ordered a drink from our new server. Everyone but my mother received their drinks; her drink was sitting on the bar next to ours, but the server might not have been able to carry them all at once; he then forgot to bring hers when he left. My mother's drink remained on the bar for 4-5 minutes. The server being out of site, we attempted to get Tim's attention. We were successful; Tim informed us that we were not his concern after we left his bar. My mother asked if she could have her drink as she had been waiting a few minutes. Tim then walked over and leaned on our table. He said, very superior, "Oh, that drink? That one right over there? Yeah? Look at it just sitting there..." My mom asked if he would be okay with getting it, as the server hadn't been back in a bit. Tim returned to the bar; I asked my family if they knew him due to the dry humour. Or if this is what they were talking about when they informed me about the first poor interaction with Tim. Feeling patronized, my family could see that I was becoming angry; they instructed me not to say anything or that he might spit on our food if I did. I said, "Spit on our food?" just then, Tim aggressively slammed the drink on the table and slid it in my mother's direction at a shocking amount of speed. Very confrontationally, Tim then questioned me. "Sorry, boy, I didn't quite hear you!" his chest was now an inch away from touching my shoulder. I asked him if he was going to spit on our food. He laughed and said, "No, we would just give you E. coli and laugh our heads off for the next two days."
Tim returned to the bar and told our server, in a very loud and rude way, as if he wanted me and my family to hear what he was saying, informing the server the drink he had forgotten about was served. At this point, I stood up and walked over to Tim and the server as they talked. I asked if I could speak to the manager. They laughed and said, "There is no manager here." Fuming, I returned to the table where my family, now upset with me for causing a scene, sat. Embarrassed, I grabbed my coat, stood up, and walked towards the exit. This was when my emotions got the best of me, and I informed Tim, not at all quietly, that if he learned to be friendly, he might make more money.
This was the most uncomfortable I have ever been in a restaurant. I have told this story to people I am close to over the last few days, and anyone who has been to Chuck's knew the person I was talking about. Unfortunately, I will not be returning to Chuck's as I don't feel safe entering or eating anything from this establishment after...
Read moreWe ordered take-out (online) on a Saturday afternoon at 4:55 PM. The website said it would be 45 minutes for pickup, but we knew that would not be accurate considering this was their first week open.
When we arrived at about 5:30, we were advised it would be another 10-15 minutes for our take-out. They misquoted the wait time. We left Chuck's with our take-out at about 6:15 PM. Had they said it would be another 45 minutes, I would have been fine with that. It's really important to set proper expectations.
We sat at the bar and had a drink. The atmosphere is great, and the bartender provided great service. Actually, everyone provided great service. They were all very friendly and courteous!
The ribs (full rack) were the only great part of the meal, we gave them an 8.5 out of 10. The fries were undercooked and there was about 10 of them (and some fry pieces). After putting them in the air fryer for a bit, they were good. The gravy was standard, it was good. Compared to other places that offer ribs, they were a good value at $21 (if they came with a proper size of side). They don't come with the "extras" like a bun, veggies, or coleslaw, which is probably why they are a good value.
The quarter chicken was dry, luckily it came with a BBQ type of dipping sauce, we used all of it (which was easy, since there was only about 1.5 ounces of it (a small portion cup, the size normally used for Jell-O shooters). We had upgraded the side to a Caesar salad; it was tiny ("made us laugh" tiny), they forgot to include the dressing, and they put the salad in with the hot food. The quarter chicken with Caesar salad was $14 and wouldn't have filled up a child. The quarter chicken dinner from another popular food joint always fills me up and is the same price.
The Garlic Cheese Pan Bread was not garlicy at all and only had a little cheese on top. The website states "SOAKED WITH GARLIC BUTTER", which it definitely was not. They were out of the carrot cake, so we had to substitute another dessert, buckaroo.
Our bill was $62 for all of this, and would have been completely worth it if the food was all up to par and had proper sides. We had looked through photos of the Chuck's in the Sault, their fries and salad portions looked at least double what we received, and the Garlic Cheese Pan Bread looked like it was "soaked" with garlic butter.
It appears almost every other review is 5/5, so I'm not sure why our experience was so massively different than others. If I could give a 2.5/5 I would, since half our experience was very good.
We'll give Chuck's another shot at some point, but it won't be...
Read moreWas very mediocre. I can't blame the server but the restaurant was unprepared for the Labour Day crowd. We were a party of two. We came at the end of the dinner rush. Had a drink at the bar. I had a beer on tap, not an exciting line up, I had a Bud Light 18oz and she had an 18oz Cesar. The Ceasar she said was flavorful and it was only $7, the beer was $6. Cheap start for drinks. Our table took about 15-20 minutes. We had turned down booths as we preferred a table, we knew we'd wait a bit longer. Most of the seating is pub height tables and chairs followed by booths and very limited freestanding tables. We ordered the Chuck size Ceasar salad and it came with garlic flatbread. It was reasonably priced at around $12. She wanted to split the regular size Ceasar salad as she usually fills up on appetizers and doesn't eat her whole main. Glad we got the sharable size. It wasn't that big but it was decent for two. We had a couple more drinks, Moscow Mule $6 and a 30oz Canadian $8 as they ran out of Bud Light and Budweiser. She had Top Sirloin (medium) 7oz and lobster tail for $25 and I had the Ribeye steak (medium rare) for $25 both with just the regular sides of fries and corn. The medium steak was cooked properly but the Ribeye was medium edging on medium well. They advertise as having AAA grade steaks. I think the rating is debatable. The steaks were both over seasoned. I didn't expect a high quality steakhouse, after all it is Crabby Joe's rebranded as Chuck's Roadhouse. Anyways, steaks that are over seasoned are generally of lower quality. The final bill came to under $120 with gratuity. It wasn't anything special, it was just okay at best. The server was very personable and as attentive as she could be as she appeared to be managing more tables than I'd normally see in a restaurant. Overall, it wasn't a restaurant I'd return to. Yes there's something for everybody, a very diverse menu. Sometimes that isn't a good sign. It didn't appear that anything was a Chuck's Roadhouse specialty. Nothing they do better than others'. Just mediocre at best, honestly a little less than mediocre. That's why I gave it two stars. The server was trying it's just that the food overall was nothing better than you could do at home in a grill...
