Ever since moving to Codrington I've been looking for a bakery in the area that does a proper sourdough. These folks are a bit out of the way, so I've had them on my to-do list for a while.
I finally decided today was the day to take a drive up to Havelock and see what this bakery is all about.
The croissants are flaky and decadent. The danishes are full of flavour, and they don't need to cheat by drowning them in icing sugar. The pumpkin seeds on the whole wheat sourdough are so perfectly toasted they can be eaten on their own (and you will, because as you're slicing they leap off the bread and scatter everywhere ... I hunted every last one down because yum).
Oh, yeah, and the sourdough: we've found our sourdough bakery.
Havelock is very lucky to have this place. We're happy to have an excuse to road trip up here...

I found the price to be reasonable for the two croissants. They were big in size, probably at 25% bigger than an average croissant, but it didn't taste like a croissant to me. I found the croissant to be lacking butter, and it was not flaky like a proper croissant is. It was more like a flakier bread roll shaped as a croissant. I feel that if more butter and more laminating were applied, it'd be much better. As for the customer service, she was young and looked a little lost and a little shy to speak with he public. I'm not sure I'll be...
Read moreA delightful surprise just off highway 7 with a spacious, spotless interior, excellent sandwiches and friendly service at a modest price. Delicious ham and cheese (not our supermarket inferior products) with real butter on sourdough bread and good coffee. The washroom was large and absolutely clean. Potted vegetables for sale by the windows were a charming bonus to an enjoyable break from the long highway drive. Coming from the west, the cafe/bakery is easy to see on the north side of the road but because it is just down the street a few buildings it would be easy to miss coming...
