This is a hidden gem place. Family owned and local. If I could give them Michelin stars, I would. They give 15% off to those holding a South Simcoe Theatre ticket. As a dancer/actor I love that they support art!
Atmosphere/Staff: Diner style with booths and chair/table seating. They have HUGE windows which made it sunny and bright inside. I enjoyed that cuz I’m like a flower that needs the sun to bloom. There are shady areas to sit if you prefer to hide like a vampire from the sun. Fun artwork, some that may possibly be local, hang around the place. They played classic rock and funk music which was very enjoyable. Leanne, Nick, and Stavros were SUPER sweet and friendly. They bring the meals out to your table after you order. Leanne is like your adorable aunt and Stavros has a boisterous energy as he grooves to the music while cooking. They have regular customers as they chat with them and greet them by name.
Burgers: They have their in house homemade burgers called “Master Burgers” which when I took a bite, made me pause as I registered the delicious flavours. My partner asked if I was ok cuz I just stopped. The Master banquet burger was very tender and juicy. I’m not sure how to describe the flavour other than YUM. They do also have not in house burgers. I don’t know why because the Master burger is everything, but I haven’t tried it yet to compare. I’m very curious now.
Fish: I had the fresh halibut that is battered in house. Very fresh and not fishy tasting. The batter was not too thick and perfectly fried crispy. They also have a frozen haddock version which I haven’t tried.
Sides: Onion Rings were the showstopper after the Master Burger. I’ve had a LOT of different onion rings…these were the best I’ve ever had. Not a single one of them was soggy. All were beer battered and fried perfectly crisp. Their chef is a star at frying. My partner said he could hear the crunch of every bite.
Poutine had glorious melty marble cheddar cheese. It’s not your traditional Quebecois poutine with cheese curds, but it was delicious and I liked that all the cheese was melted. The gravy was traditional brown style gravy that hit.
Coleslaw was a nice refreshing vinegrette style coleslaw, which I prefer. I’m not a mayo fan, so this was great. Crisp and tangy. Not too sweet.
Soup of the day was beef barley. It slaps, but it’s not what you would think of a traditional brown style beef barley. It’s definitely homemade with chunks of different veggies, beef, and barley. It’s like something your nonna made that warms you up.
Drinks: They had traditional fountain pop, alcoholic drinks, and also various bottled pops. Other than such pops as Jarritos, they had a European one called Barbican. They had strawberry and pomegranate. I tried strawberry. It was a little sweet for me, but for someone into pop, you should give it a try. Definitely bursting with strawberry flavour.
Things that caught my eye to try next time: South Simcoe Theatre Show 🎭 Ice cream and/or milkshake. The not in house burger. Gyro (They’re Greek & everything else has been amazing. 👀) Salad Chicken...
Read moreI've always had a good encounter until tonight April 10th 2025 coming in. We get chicken Souvlaki on a bun. They always put the fries on the bun. My husband and I do not like this. So we ask for them to be on the side. The girl working there told me she now has to charge me for them on the side. I'm more then disappointed and baffled. She said it's costing them more money. But if you already put the fries on the chicken Souvlaki and all we are asking is for them separate then I'm not sure why she is saying this. I actually heard her say to the guy " I'm just going to tell her we are charging for fries" Never did i think that was going to be for me. Maybe me not leaving a tip or honestly maybe it's because I tried calling in for over half hour and she said their busy can't i see and she told me they aren't answering phones there is only two of them. See this is where I am left baffled it was only the two guys before her and they managed so why the shitty service and attitude from her today. Been coming here since I was 14 very disappointed today.
We always tip and generously. I didn't leave a tip when I paid because of the unwelcoming feeling when I walked in the door. I honestly thought their phone was off the hook. That's all I had said to her, thinking I was being helpful. To deal with her attitude.
So just got home and we opened our food to eat and they added toppings we didn't ask for. So off my husband goes to get the proper food. This is such a huge inconvenience and...
Read moreOn my visits to Master Burger in Cookstown, the Banquet Burger has been my go-to choice – a homemade, juicy burger that’s delightfully messy and satisfyingly filling. It's the kind of meal that makes you plan to skip dinner because you're so full.
The selection of toppings sticks to the tried-and-true favorites, ensuring that all the classic burger combinations are on the table. When it comes to sides, the fries and onion rings have been spot on, both in taste and portion size.
But the food isn't the only draw. The dine-in decor adds a surprisingly pleasant touch to the experience. It's replete with an array of plants and bathed in natural light, making for a very inviting atmosphere to enjoy your meal in. It's this setting that elevates the traditional burger outing to something a bit more special.
Master Burger gets a solid 3.5 stars from me. It nails the traditional burger experience with a Banquet Burger worth coming back for, and the setting is a step above what you might expect from your average burger spot. If it's a hearty, classic burger you're after, with a side of homestyle ambiance, you'll find yourself quite at home at Master Burger...
