Canada Day 2025 BC Adventure For Canada Day 2025 my wife, Marg, and I travelled to Harrison Lake Resort, BC, for the Sasquash festival. The following day we went to pick up our son, Greg, in Chillawack, to join us for Canada Day celebrations. But by the time we got to Agassiz we almost lost the driver's side front tire. [only 2 loose nuts left]. Greg, still in Chilliwack, was told to hopped on uber and join us, in Agassiz and the saga began.
Luckily Agassiz proved to be a God send re: help @ Lordco, Pioneer garage and Horn of Plenty Cafe.
Greg did his internet magic and texted us that Lordco was still open till 5PM. Went there right away to Lordco, met Brian and Marissa, telling them our car troubles. Brian literally jumped into action, grabbing tools, he went out to our car that was parked in the school district parking lot, to effect a fix. Sadly 3 lugs were sheared clean off. Now what? Back to Lordco and Marrisa was already on the phone to Don at Pioneer Garage.
Don being very busy said "OK, bring it over and we'll have a look at it in the morning". Greg again phoned Uber and got us all back to Harrison Lake. The following morning Greg and I hopped on the BC transit to Agassiz, tightened the 2 remaining nuts and got the crippled car to Don's Pioneer garage. With some time to kill we asked if there was a restaurant near for breakfast, Don pointed us to Horn of Plenty Cafe and there we had a wonderful breakfast, lovely conversion with a charming local lady. Pioneer garage had a look and Will, at the garage, informed us that a part could be obtained but would have to be brought in since Lordco didn't have the needed part. Vehicle now laid up until parts got to Pioneer garage so what to do. Marg was back at Harrison Lake waiting for Greg and I to solved our dilemma but we needed to wait until the parts got to Agassiz.
Greg and I got an uber ride to Chilliwack to rent a vehicle, drove to Harrison Lake to pick up Marg and then on to Kelowna. The following day got the call from Pioneer garage, car fixed, yea. Greg went back to Vancouver in his own car, I drove the rental back to Chilliwack, then hopped a taxi to Agassiz, picked up the car and drove home to Kelowna. Saga ended happily with much help and friendly assistance from the wonderful people in the little town with a big...
Read moreDo not go here if you are going with children under 8. The tables are literally crammed together so close, you can reach out and touch your neighbor. As a result, this only leaves enough space in between tables for one person to squeeze by. My 4 year old got up a few times to come over to my side of the table to be near me and hug me. Each time he got up and was in the small crack in between tables, the server would growl for him to "move", "get out of the way" and "sit down". My kids are pretty good and don't run all over the place. My 7 year old took my son to the bathroom 10 feet away, when they finished, they opened the door, but for some reason remained in there. They weren't in there for more than 3 or 4 minutes when the server yelled to me, "Um, yea... they're just fooling around in there now". I got up to see what was going on and they were trying to flush the detective toilet, definitely not 'fooling around'. In order to flush thier waste, I had to hold down the handle for 30 seconds; not something most 4 or 7 year olds would know to do. Completely not family friendly what so ever. 1 server for all the tables in the cafe. As a result, my coffee was not topped up ever and I didnt get any of the things I asked for (napkins, extra cutlery etc.) I grew up in this town and still have strong connections here. I remember going here as a teenager. Seemed fine then, but totally different coming back as a mid-thirties mother with kids. I felt very patronized as a single mom with the stereotype that I was "struggling and couldnt control my kids and just an irresponsible mother". I feel as a single parent, it automatically gives license for strangers to criticize my children, my prospects, my morals; Had I had a man in there with me and presented as a 2 parent household, I doubt I would have gotten half the dirty looks and eyerolls from staff and they certainly be wouldnt be shouting commands at my children and telling them how to behave; as if I can't manage to "control" my children on my own. Felt very stereotyped and...
Read moreI highly recommend anyone passing through Agassiz to stop by this quaint gem. Deb, an employee, welcomed me with a friendly smile. Comfort food like homemade apple pie, muffins and potato leek soup will soothe your soul. Support the local economy to keep establishments like this one from falling under like so many restaurants during Pandemic 2020.
Update: I have come back day after day because of the soul food. Now it is valuable to say first that I will go out of my way to have a mind-blowing feeding. The hands that create and serve, the ingredients and their journey, even the music and vibe of the establishment are all deciding factors on whether I will spend my hard earned money at a restaurant. If you want comfort in the form of nourishment, please start planning your way here.
The apple pie: one of favourite pies on planet earth. Why? It is not to sweet. The filling is abundant and the soft flaky lightly golden crust holds everything together perfectly. You can purchase a whole one for around $40 . Tell them 24 hours in advance
Orange muffin: light and subtle sweetness. Get it.
Potato Bacon soup: I had this on day 2 of me returning. This was roll your eyes to the back of your head good. You know that feeling when Mom, or someone like a mother to you, hugged you just because she wanted to or because she knew you needed one...ya well, same feeling. Close your eyes when you try this soup. Not on daily menu so watch for specials.
Veggie Omelet: the main reason why I have become a regular here while I am temporarily in the area. The technique used to prepare and cook the vegetables are recognized. The seasoning you ask? Ummm perfecto for...
