A&W Canada — Restaurant in Merritt

Its your regular every town's A&W. However I have to give a big kudos to the staff at this location. I went in to get a couple chicken buddies, without realizing I had forgotten my wallet at home, until I had ordered and it was time to pay. At first I explained I forgot my wallet and would be back later, only to remember I have google pay. After linking my bank app to my Google pay, I proceeded to order again, except when it came time to pay this time, my virtual debit card would not process payment. We tried a few times, I even switched to the virtual visa card, which also wouldn't compute with the machine. Finally after many failed attempts, I had given up and ready to go home. Now I probably was not going to bother returning with the wallet, as I currently use my legs as my main transportation means and it would now be a time crunch to return in time before close. I was halfway across the dining area to the exit when the very friendly and empathetic gentleman at the register, offered to get me the 2 chicken buddies. I thanked him graciously as he explained a similar situation that had happened to him recently. If you read this fine sir, thank you again and kudos to Merritt and to this A&W location for having outstanding staff and genuine members of society. I am a regular weekly customer at this restaurant. Today was an incredibly poor visit. I was incorrectly charge $1.50 more than I should have. When this was brought to the attention of 2 cashiers, they had a rudeness and smirk on their faces that was infuriating. Their first answer was that it was taxes. Well, as a business owner myself, and someone whom understands basic math, this was not correct. The second answer was the the classic breakfast I ordered had a higher price than what was advertised on their menu. This was also incorrect. I spoke with the manager who did admit it was wrong. But instead of handing me the money they ripped me off for, they stand around the till looking very puzzled. I finally walked out as this wasn't about the money, but that it is about the principal of the matter. I won't be back which is disappointing as it's always been one of my favorite breakfast spots. I hope my $1.50 was worth losing a regular...

June 29, 2025 -- Food is still awesome, South Asian or Middle East staff are extremely slow or non-attentive customers. Girl took an order, then seemed to look at the til and then slowly walk away, after the next customer walked up and waited to give her an order. We all stood there, while the South Asian or Middle East staff lounged, got them selves a drink, or just kind of walked out and left (end of shift maybe). Two white guys jumped to the rescue and got stuff moving. Tall skinny kid with the toque was awesome. Could tell the two white guys on shift were kind of wondering "what the hell" and were politely working around the rest and trying to do their best. The South Asian or Middle East girl at the till was walking so slow, it was awkward; just didn't care, and totally blew off the next customer without a word, then leisurely strolled out, without a care in the world.
