Yummy Pirates. Tucked away in an unexpected neighborhood, this little gem was a great surprise. Continuing on the coffee pilgrimage to different roasteries around the city, this place was quite lovely. For those who want serious brew at home coffee, this place has a vast array of different coffee beans. Their selection is plentiful from blends to single origins all named whimsically. As you enter the place you have this large white board on the side highlighting the coffee menu, a bit of info of drink compositions and offerings. Great reference for types of drinks they can make at the place. Mainly for takeout, there are some bar stool chairs if you want to take a rest. I personally like blends, which is more balanced and had their Gateway blend as a Flat White. It was delicious, perfect milk to coffee ratio, balanced, smooth and went down easily. You know they know their coffee when they do not ask you for cup size when you order a Flat White (ie. should always be a small drink). I’ve been to many places where you can’t distinguish between Flat Whites and Lattes. You know it is serious coffee when they do not burn the milk (ie. Lava hot) and they put care in their coffee extract and latte art. The award winning latte artist asked for our spirit animal and we requested a tiger and a koala, so cute and beautiful. They also had a selection of prepackaged baked goods if you needed a fix with the drink. The 2 gentlemen who tended to us were super friendly and engaging. We talked about out the coffees, my Uniqlo shirt and their accomplishments. Enjoyed my time there. Purchased a few bags of coffee of other blends and cannot wait to try them at home. May have found a new gem. Look at their logo, it is...
Read moreI was looking for a coffee shop in the area yesterday, and Pirates of Coffee intrigued me with all the high reviews. The guy working there was very cool and knows his coffee. It's not only a cafe, but you can see they also roast and package the beans here and ship them all over the world! The guy was showing me the ethically-sourced coffee beans still green straight from the origin farms. It was really fascinating to see and smell all the unique flavours they created that most people have never seen before with coffee. The other incredible thing is, they don't put sugar in their products, their coffees are naturally so flavourful that sugar isn't needed. I tried a latte with the Cocoa Bomb coffee, and it was so good. They even have such impressive latte art. I don't know how he did that sea horse art so fast lol. If you look on the product packaging and on their website, you can see full details of each of their coffees and their origins and recommended instructions. I'm also a fan of their branding, it's very fun and consistent throughout their packaging. I hope they can expand all over the GTA so more people can discover their unique and amazing coffees. I can't wait to try more, so I'll...
Read moreThis is a hidden gem and no other coffee shop even comes close!! Herbert & Wasim are so passionate, talented and truly have a gift-the ability to make a solid coffee.
We have tried the Spanish latte & Dark Silk mocha. & both are exceptional.
Only pain-point: it’s not in our neighborhood or we would be here every day!
Editing my review months later: we have been to Pirates dozens of times in the past several months (going at least 1x every 10 days). Have tried most of their coffee bean flavors, have started purchasing beans from them to make coffee at home, and it is our go-to fav cafe.
Pointing out though one annoyance & forewarning that I am going to be harsh: other customers, who walk in confused, take forever to place an order & then get annoyed that sugar isn’t offered, showing attitude to the staff. This is not a Tim Hortons - there is no double double, no French Vanilla, etc.
Do some research ahead of time, understand this is a place for coffee fans/lovers. If you have a sweet tooth, the staff will recommend lighter & more fruitier coffee. Or if you absolutely must have sugar, go to the Tim Hortons down the street, or take your coffee...
