My parents and I visited this Chinese-Mauritian restaurant on a Saturday evening during Labour Day weekend for dinner, and we were able to get a seat straight away. My dad is Mauritian so we were curious to see how Mauritian food tasted here in Montréal. The owners seated us, served cold water, and took our orders. They were very pleasant individuals who explained the table d'hôte menu and answered any questions we had regarding the dishes. We were very happy to speak with other Mauritian people. The owners were also equally pleasant with all guests that we saw. Please keep in mind that you are allowed to bring your own alcohol here, which is really handy if you want to save money on having drinks with your meal. I ended up going to the Couche-Tard nearby and buying a couple of beers.
In the meantime, we were served appetizers as indicated on the menu. First was the chou frit (called gato lissou back home), which are cabbage fritters. It's usually served as a tapas alongside drinks, or from street vendors, so I was pleasantly surprised to see it as an appetizer. It was extremely crunchy and tasty, with the perfect amount of salt. It reminded me a lot of my grandmother's cooking, so that should speak to the authenticity. The other appetizer was a split pea soup (we call it dal), which was also prepared very nicely and tasted quite good.
We ended up ordering dishes à la carte; the table d'hôte seems like a very good deal, but we weren't too hungry. I ordered the jarret d'agneau with rougaille sauce which had perfect colour and taste. The tomato sauce was not tangy or sweet like other restaurants that make tomato dishes, so this sauce was perfectly reflective of Mauritian cuisine. The lamb portion was large and the meat was extremely tender. Very good overall, 10/10 for that dish.
My dad ordered the nouilles sautées à la mauricienne (called mine frite or mine frire back home) with beef. This is essentially a Chinese-Mauritian version of stir-fried noodles. He really enjoyed them, and would order them again. 8/10
My mom ended up ordering a dish that was not on the menu. The server mentioned that they could make fish or octopus vindaye on request, so my mom ordered the octopus vindaye. It was quite solid in terms of spices, but it needed a little bit of salt added to make the flavours come out. The octopus was extremely tender which lead to a pleasant mouthfeel. Overall 9/10 for that dish.
To wrap it up, this restaurant was awesome. We had a really great time as the service, food, and pricing were all wonderful. We'll definitely be visiting again once we're back in Montréal.

Amazing dishes, affordable prices, and the best service around. I love coming here.
Mauritius Island (Ile Maurice) is a unique place in the world where many cultures have come together and created something really special. The best way for me to put the cuisine is the 'fusion of all the best things ever'. It's creole, chinese, indian and european all in one. And if that seems like a mouthful, it's not. It's the most satisfying and cozy incarnation of foods around. And this place does it really well, it's Mauritian friends of mine who recommended it!
I've been here about five times and it's affordable enough for me to have tried a broad number of dishes. Of course the coconut shrimp is a must every time, plus an extra for take-away. You will not get better service and better food in Verdun, not even at those white-collar reservation places. (seriously though what are those doing here?)
It's also across from a decent bistro-pub style place so if you wanna wind down with a few drinks on a terrasse after having one of the most bombshell amazing dishes in the entire borough, you're a stone's throw away from good cocktails. I'll update this review with photos soon. If you want to eat somewhere in the borough and you're not sure, just come here. It's a lovely experience to dine with friends.
edit:
marked that random 1 star review by "a google user" as spam because uhmm. They're not open at lunch time, they open in the evening. Must be a random negative review from a competitor because it's the only review in their account and the facts...
Read moreThis is a very nice family run restaurant. It is not a very big, so it might not always be easy to get a table. I suggest that you make a reservation before hand on weekends. The food was delicious. They have an a la carte and a set meal menu. For my appetizer I had the fried coconut shrimps and they were a delight. I then had the fish and shrimp combo as main course. You have a choice of sauce and I went for the sweet and sour. They went well together. However, the dessert was nothing to die for. I had the Tiramisu and a friend had the tapioca pudding. Don't expect anything too sweet. All in all, it was a nice dinner with generous portions. However, I didn't know the fish and shrimp combo was fried and it was a bit too much fried stuff for me at the end. If you like fried stuff, they do a great job of making them extra crispy. This is definitely a place to try. Do try their Vanilla Tea which is a very local tea drink to have...
