Cod Squad Fish & Chips — Restaurant in Nanaimo

Fish was very soggy. Either not fully cooked, or maybe not fully defrosted from frozen. The batter was also not fully cooked. Fries were good.

Portions were very small. The fish was about half the size of most places, it seemed like our 2 piece was 1 piece cut in half. Also not many fries.

I ordered a 2 piece for myself and the lady asked if I wanted 2 coleslaws since there was 2 of us. I said no, I am just ordering and want a single plate.

On payment I was not given a bill, but the charge seemed high and I wanted to know what tax was. I asked for the bill and it just said 2 piece fish and chips. I asked the server why it seemed high. At that point they showed me the back of the menu, which said they charged to share. Unbelievable. A good scam to get more money for doing nothing. They don't itemize it so you won't know. I don't know if that is legal or not, but definitely scammy.

Will not be back, and will recommend against anyone...

Not as good when new ownership took over. Dirty floors, the glasses were skuzzy. The fish was sub par. And there were 6 of us, she tried to say 1 of us didn't pay. But she never made sure we all got recipts. Mom and i paid cash and the other girls paid with a card, 2 of which the girl helped with. She never said thank you when my mom paid cash and basically gave a $3 tip. The only small saving grace was she chased the other girls out saying she found the other recipt. But still doesnt really make up for the fact that she tried to accuse of a dine and dash. Which if that were the case why would we bother lining up to pay? Not as good as it was at all! Not going back!!! Pirate chips has way better...

This place is currently open only for takeout. To say they have large portions is an understatement. The fish portions are twice the size of other places and same holds for the fries. There's quite a bit of oil so you'll want to get extra napkins to soak up the oil from the fish and fries. The batter is crunchy and tasty. It's a good idea to order the pickens which are the fish version of chicken nuggets. I however did not like their tartar sauce or coleslaw. It did nothing to enhance what was very good fish and chips. So we brought some home, put it into the toaster oven with paper towels to soak up the oil, got the tartar sauce I bought at Whole Foods and had a...
