J's Fish & Chips — Restaurant in Newmarket

The high rating is real. J’s makes excellent fish and chips! The portions are generous, prices reasonable (have you tried buying a piece fresh halibut lately?) and the service friendly and fast.

I called in my order and it was ready exactly when J said it would be.

Some might object to the thinner cut of the chips, but I much prefer then the way J does them because they are a bit crisper than the chunky original style chips.

The batter is crunchy and light and for deep fried food, amazingly not too oily - the paper box was not soaked in oil like a lot of places.

The onion rings deserve a shout out because they are in the same crispy batter - not the inferior frozen or bread crumb coating a lot of places offer.

Clearly this place has a loyal customer base- the sign on the door when I arrived said they are taking pre-orders for Good Friday on April 18th - more than a month away. They apologized but no walk in orders would be taken on that day. That is just smart business- taking care of your regulars and letting everyone know how busy they know they will be that day.

I was recommended by an employee where I work to come here. Portions were actually a good decent size and from what I was told, you can buy just the pieces of fish and then add fries on its own, but will have to try that out next time. I just really wanted a good spot to have some lunch.

This definitely hit the spot. The fish tasted awesome and when you add the malt vinegar and some lemon to it, flavour and deliciousness is elevated.

One thing I don’t do at fish and chips spots is ketchup. I just don’t think it’s needed and you just get that fried taste that much more

Service was great. I believe it was the owner who pointed out the daily special which is what everyone gets. Got my food fairly quickly and when I went on a Wednesday lunch time, it wasn’t busy, but it was steady enough.

My hubby and I went for lunch today. I ordered the Halibut and Chips, with a side of gravy. The fish was very yummy and the batter was perfect. The gravy tasted like a thick au jus with a really nice flavour, something different from a basic brown gravy and I like different. The fries were great, cripsy on the outisde and soft in the middle. My hubby had the hamburger with cheese and bacon. He too really enjoyed his meal, and he can be picky! He told me it was really good and cooked perfectly. The service was amazing! The owner J, brought us our meal to our table and checked in a few times to insure we had everything we needed. He was very friendly and it really did show how much he cared for our visit and our experience in his restaurant. The environment was quiet, comfortable and very clean. I left feeling happy and very satisfied (and full!). We will definitely revisit...
