Sugar Marmalade is one of the most filthy institutions I have ever come across of.
When we first walked in we were greeted with a warm atmosphere and modest furniture, great. We scrolled through the menu, nice looking dishes, estatic photography, great. We get our food, great.
Then, we go to pay and that's when things started to take a turn for the worst. They don't accept any credit cards so we had to use an atm. Ok, we could do that. Except the atm is empty and it is always empty. So we walk around in the cold trying to find an atm. We go to the store near by, they have an atm, but it also doesn't work.
We walked back and my friend tries to make a negotiation. Eventually she sets up e-transfer and pays for us.
While my was friend bickering with the clerks, I sudently smell somethings horrendous, I look around but I can't find the source. To this day I can not tell you what that smell is but I have never been exposed to anything like it and hope to never will.
However, I do see a lot.
If you turn your head a little you can see the cook making the cold food. He is not dressed in any proper wear. He wears a glove, which he never takes off and continuous to work with my friend, preparing food at the same time and tapping away at the machines.
That's not what makes me want to vomit.
The entire area is covered in dust and dirt. Every single surface. There is food and spills laying around that will never and based on the the layer of dust, have never been cleaned.
That still is not what makes me want to vomit.
I turn around, shielding my face from the smell and I then see the hot food counter.
The hot food counter is conveniently located behind a wall separation. The first thing that catches my eye are the garbage bags laying around. For a moment, I think that this is where they throw the waste and then I notice a small working space among the trash bags, and utter chaos. My stomach drops as the cook ties up a garbage bag and moves back to work on the food.
Who needs soap or a real working space when you have a wall to conveniently separate you.
For your stomach and mine, do not go to Sugar Marmalde. No matter how cute their food is, it is not worth it. London is a big city, find your self another tea shop.
Preferably one that uses soap in their...
Read moreSugar Marmalade was my favourite and comfort restaurant from last 3 years, I was coming here almost every other week and sometimes twice, I love the food and everything about the restaurant and its all just amazing! However, costumer service can be improved, we ordered something that we didnt like at all, its definitely our fault that we ordered something that we didn’t know about but when we spoke to the supervisor of this place and told her our problem we were told that we will not refund your order coz you ordered it and you didnt know, which i completely understand, but just offering something else instead of that dish or atleast doing something about it would have solved the issue. I hope the owner takes this in consideration and train the staff accordingly. A good service goes a long long way, and keeps you guests intact. Its not the first time its happening thats why I am posting a review this time. Sadly, I wont be coming here for a very long time now 😢 Until then good luck and thank you for you...
Read moreThe desserts here are amazing! I would totally recommend coming for dessert. The food is good but very small portions so it's more of snack food but not at a snack price. Also if you aren't a fan of fish then you might not like a few of the dishes. I really enjoyed the popcorn chicken and the kimchi fries but they come with a topping of dried fish flakes which has a strong flavour. I grew up eating that kind of fish (red herring I believe) so I was fine but I know others don't like it. They DO NOT TAKE DEBIT/CREDIT and are CASH ONLY. I went recently and their ATM was also out of order so come with cash or you're going to have to go to MAC'S to use their ATM. All in all I recommend for dessert! They have a great aesthetic and the service is pretty good you just have to get used to using the call buttons. The "servers" will NOT come to you unless you press the call button...
