The Mule in Port Dover is a deliciously different place to enjoy good Mexican-type food & drink in a unique setting! We discovered this place too late in the season to be able to enjoy their extensive outdoor patio that promises to be an awesome place to dine in warmer weather. But we were happy to be able to dine inside this time because it’s worth the experience: a colourful décor with a warm Mexican vibe. The only negative is the uncomfortable metal chairs they have, but that could be more a reflection of the lack of padding I have on that part of my anatomy than anything else. The food & atmosphere are so good that I’ll probably just bring a cushion next time.
Their menu is designed in such a way that at first, you’d question whether they actually had any food to offer at all! The first four pages of the menu feature only drinks, from cocktails to margaritas to beer, with an entire page devoted to tequilas, and another entire page devoted to bourbons! Very impressive indeed. Especially when you see that they also offer flights of the various varieties!
But it’s only when you hit the last page that you finally discover the food. Their offerings are divided into Tacos and Not Tacos. Very cute :) We started off with some offerings from the latter: guacamole & chips and fries supreme with beef & pork. The fries plate was to die for! It was sooooo good! It consisted of crispy spiced French fries with a lightly spiced queso and shredded cheddar cheese, along with pico de gallo, lime crema and green onion with ground beef & pork on top. Just WOW!
For tacos, we tried the pork belly taco and the achiote chicken taco, along with two tacos from a special feature menu: the piggy bean taco (not sure why they called it that because there are no beans on it!) and the fried portobello mushroom taco. All of them were stacked, messy to eat, and absolutely delicious! If we had to pick a favourite, it would probably be piggy bean taco. Need to get that one on the regular menu!
An indication of how good the food was is that I only managed to take one picture of it, the very first dish we had. It wasn’t until after we’d polished everything off that I remembered I’d wanted to take photos of everything! Next time, hopefully.
All of the tacos were somewhat spicy, so my wife was thankful for a bottle of cold Jarritos and I was able to cool my tongue with a glass of cold beer.
Service was friendly & attentive. The chef was very amusing in the kitchen wearing a taco hat!
Highly recommend that you try this place! We will...
Read moreWhat do you do when Rogers is out?!?! You grab cash, get in the car and head out on an old school road trip like back in the day. Headed out to the neighboring town of Port Dover for a nice walkabout and a solo lunch. I remember reading a recommendation on a post for The Mule and thought that I would give it a try. Its located in Port Dover, across from the park, where The Crepe House used to be. It is a bright coloured and welcoming restaurant which is super inviting. I sat out on the patio that had lots of shady spots, and umbrellas out. It was a nice warm day with sun and cloud which was perfect patio weather. The Mule is known for Tacos, Tequila and Burbon. The menu is set up mostly of alcohol and then on the back a small menu of Tacos vs Not Tacos. I decided I was in the mood for fries so my choices were a meat poutine or fries surpreme which came veggie or you could add meat to it for an additional $3.00. I tried the veggie fries surpreme. As you can see my food looked fantastic. The portion was a bit small but it was filling and a good small lunch. The thing that got me about these fries were the flavors. Oh my lanta. The fries were perfectly cooked and seasoned. Then there was a queso sauce which was soooo flavorful. Then there was sour creme for the cool flavor that the fries surpreme needs. Then add super fresh tomatoes and green onions. All of which married the dish together perfectly. There was NOTHING I would change about it. It was like an upscale fries surpreme with amazing flavors and add in options. I would love to go back for drinks and tacos. Also, special mention to the servers who were going with the flow of a cash only day. They were friendly, welcoming and super attentive to my needs. Highly...
Read moreThe one star was for the band who played so well, and the wait staff was nice. Other than that, do NOT waste your money here! My partner and I bought four different things and everything was either not good or bad. I had the sweet potato taco, which was very dry (and small) and cost $7 for ONE. We got the $15 Fries Supreme which was decent except for the fact that every once and a while you’d get a sour, tangy bite that tasted almost like something had spoiled. It ruined the whole plate. Next we got the $8 refried bean dip with chips, which was black beans instead of brown with a bit of hot sauce and tomatoes and green onions. Subpar, if not kind of gross. The chips weren’t special either. The $3 side of guacamole tasted like they bought it at Fresh Co. Finally, the waitress offered us a dessert, which they didn’t have on the menu. Some type of cheese cake brownie. It was a tiny, one inch high (if that) square or a brownie with a scoop of “cheesecake filling” on the top. Not only was it gross, it was TINY and cost $10. They didn’t say anything about the price or have it on the menu. I am super disappointed. The price, the size, the...
