Initially I did not submit a written review with my star rating feeling first of all that this new restaurant needed time to find their way around and not wanting to set a negative tone during this early phase of their development. But, since the owners wrote to request further explanation of my three star review, I feel that this may be beneficial for them.
First of all, I should say that we were led to come to this restaurant by a review in the Ottawa Citizen by Peter Hum. His review contained positive and negative comments, as is almost always the case with such reviews by him. Even so, my wife and I decided to give it a chance, since we have never tried Nepali cuisine before. This restaurant features Nepali recipes but also serves Indian, Chinese and some Japanese (sushi) dishes. This may be overextending themselves. The thing that makes the restaurant unique is their Nepali menu items, so we stuck with them.
I should say too that we were put off by the location, being in a mini mall on a busy street, but when we looked inside it seemed the owners had gone to some trouble and expense to attempt to provide a nice ambiance.
The service was friendly and the meals were prepared quite quickly. One comment on the service that may help, the waitress never once asked us if we were enjoying our meal. That would have given us the opportunity to comment on the menu items we had chosen, which might have been helpful for a new restaurant. I will not attempt to review our choices here, as Peter Hum's review covered most of the items that we chose. That said, I will say that we were not overwhelmed with these new (for us) taste sensations. To each his own perhaps. I'm sure they were well prepared in the traditional manner. They just were not to our tastes.
Finally, it is fair to comment I believe that, in this age when we all have had to get used to the prices on everything going through the roof, we found the final bill, including tip, of $88 a bit much for what we had (one shared appetizer and two meals). Especially since the restaurant had no liquor license and so all that one of us had to drink was tap water while the other had a mango lassi. This amount is more than we would normally spend for a...
Read moreI've visited Everest Restaurant a few times, and while there are some standout dishes, overall, the experience has been hit or miss.
What’s Good:
Momos are consistently good – flavorful and well-made. Vegetable Thukpa Soup is comforting and well-balanced. Tiger Shrimp Roll is tasty with a good kick of spice. Chicken choila and goat curry is delicious.
Needs Improvement: Gobi 65 is inconsistent – sometimes it has a nice tangy taste, but other times it's overly savory and feels unbalanced. Mix Veg Fried Rice is too salty/savory for my liking.Spicy Tuna Roll is just average – nothing special. Quantity across most dishes is on the lower side compared to the price, making it feel overpriced for what you get. Ambiance and Air Conditioning could be better – it was uncomfortably hot during my visit. Service was disappointing. When we requested an appetizer to be served with gravy, it still came out dry. Instead of correcting it, the staff simply said, “Sorry, we made it like that.” That lack of accountability and flexibility really impacted the experience. Overall: The restaurant has potential with a few good menu items, but it suffers from inconsistency in taste, small portions, and an underwhelming dining environment. Some staff training on service and attention to customer requests would go a long way. If they can work on consistency and customer care, it could become...
Read moreMy partner and I visited this restaurant for the first time last night. Neither of us have ever had Nepali food, so we were very excited to try it. My partner is of Asian decent and we have vast knowledge of the traditional food, as well as a love for Indian food. We were not disappointed.
To start, our service was phenomenal. I wish we had have got the name of our server, she was kind and knowledgeable. We didn’t know what a lot of the menu items were, and she took the time to recommend some items for us and explain the choices and what they were in great detail. We started with the cauliflower bites as an appetizer, which were amazing. Definitely our favourite part of the meal. We tried the momo, which was similar in taste to a samosa but in a dumpling. They were really good too! We both got a platter with chicken and goat curry, which was very good! There was so much food that neither of us could finish! And very reasonably priced for all that we ordered.
I highly recommend this restaurant! The only slight downside was the spice level. We were warned that there were some spicy options, so we picked the mild ones. Even with our choice, some of the food was very spicy. It was not too spicy, still palatable and still yummy, but enough to make your nose run and mouth burn over time. I wouldn’t recommend taking children to eat here unless they are accustomed to...
