I have to tell you about the insane burger I just had. I have a newfound quest with trying burgers: finding something that can top this.
I'd been meaning to try this place for a while, and I'm disappointed I didn't come before now. I've been on Carling Avenue plenty of times, but I didn't notice this place until I was actually looking for it. That's because it's a hole in the wall, but without the wall. It's in a little shack with a sunbleached sign advertising the name of the place, and it's got a little tiny open sign. You could walk right past the place and not notice it. I'm very, very glad I did not.
Beneath the unassuming and somewhat hidden exterior is a small room with a fan, a condiment station in the corner, and a love test machine I'll have to try next time. And, of course, the wonderful smell of frying food. I swear, it smelled like a carnival in there while my food was cooking.
I ordered a ⅓ pound cheeseburger, all dressed, fries, and a drink. It was on the specials board, if you visit this place I'm sure you'll see it. It was a quick and easy decision to make. And let me tell you…
I left the house thinking “oh, I'll go get a burger. This is not a particularly special thing. This is normal.” But when I sat down and took a few bites of this burger I knew it was one of the best burgers I've had in a good while. It's probably been a few years since I've had one this good. Might be the best ever? Hard to say. I know for certain it was good.
I'd compare the texture to a Harvey's burger a little bit, but if Harvey's was. You know. Good. (I don't like Harvey's burgers.) All dressed, the flavors of the different toppings, bun, and patty worked together spectacularly. It was a great experience.
Moving on to the fries. These had a lot of skin left on them, as is best (in my opinion). I was given a fork, which I discarded like a fool. These are greasy, folks. They were less messy to eat than the burger was, but they certainly left a layer of grease wherever they went. That's not for everyone, but these were quite good in my opinion. If you prefer your fries more crunchy, I'd still recommend trying these, but don't be surprised if they aren't your speed. I'm sure they're excellent under a layer of gravy and cheese. I have to try the poutine next time.
All in all, it was wonderful. I'm still enjoying the last of my Pepsi. This was enjoyable to write. I'll definitely be doing more of this...
Read moreOK, let’s be clear: we, Canadians understand the french fry and the chip truck better than most. And here and eastern Ontario I would argue that we have the centre of expertise. In fact, if there were a chip truck capital of the world, it would probably be here. And of all of the best places to get french fries, egg rolls (!!) and a burger it is S&G. There is history behind SNG, fries and burgers. We have enjoyed their food for over two decades, and never been disappointed. They are friendly, professional, courteous, and service with a smile. I have been there on school days lined up with children on weekends with families and on evenings when we are hungry for a snack every time the deal has been the...
